PostPosted: Thu Feb 13, 2003 4:40 pm    Post subject: Problem with 1st boot after installation via LiveCdRom Reply with quote

Hello
i installed 1.4RC2 on my new PIV 2.4.

hda - 100gb IBM
hdb - 40gb IBM
hdc - dvd
hdd - liteon 48x burner

hda1 /boot ext2
hda2 /winxp ntfs
hda3 / ext3

hdb1 /data vfat32

I took these steps:
1) download and burned the iso for the p3 stage 3 LiveCD
2) boot and do step to step like .../install.txt

I made some things a bit different to to origin docu.
I decided to install kde, x and mozilla via group and after he first emerge -up world and it told me, that he will have to emerge a lot of different things (wich also depended on my USE Flags). So i decided to emerge a lot more than it would take for emerge -u world.
After a few hours i had a problem to emerge docbook-sgml-utils (wich is needed for XSane / USE Flag "Scanner"). nearly 2 hours of thinking and trying some different ways to solve the problem, i only found 1 way out : USE Flag -Scanner - and do not try to compile xsane *ggg*
After it, i was on the run again. Nothing seemed to be wrong. So i rebooted (after grub kernel ...):

So - after nearly 24hours compiling - trying ... i have my system done "with all my progis i need", but it hang on boot.

booting:
EXT3-fs: INFO: recovery required on readonly filesystem
EXT3: write access will be enabled during recovery

after these messages from the kernel apears, the hd led is on (no blinking - it´s shining), i cannot hear that my hd´s do anything and the only way to reboot is my reset-button.

i tried some things out like - checking fstab, check for config-files (--cfg.???). But it didn´t work.

Maybe someone can help me.

Thank you

Mike

Try setting them to Y
Not sure if needed, but you may have to add
loopdevice aswell
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP is not set

So - i changed the settings and recompiled it. After reboot:

EXT3-FS: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
VFS: mounted root on /dev
freeing unused Kernel memory
INIT: version 2.84

Then: the same thing again :-(

now it´s really getting ...

i just recompiled the kernel without framebuffer (these funny icons at boot) - but it was just the same.

Could it be, that Grub does not understand my / partition ?

this is the layout of my hd-partitioning:

0-25MB /boot
25MB-60GB WindowsXP
60GB-100GB /

does this matter or not ?

Do you have a good reason not having a swap partition ?
Your fstab file doesn't mention having one.
If you forgot, maybe you could make one on your second HD and point to it in fstab with something like:
Code:

/dev/hdb2     none     swap     sw     0 0

Ok, here's an heavily edited version of an output of
'diff --side-by-side /usr/src/linux/.config /txt/crash1976M.config > side_by_side_diff.txt'
Im using gentoo 2.4.20-r1 myself but config should be pretty similar...

Code:

> crash1976M adds this
< herring adds that
| something is different

Here we go (commenting as we go)...

Code:

#herring's .config                     | #crash1976M's .config

                           >   CONFIG_ISA=y
CONFIG_LOLAT=y                        <
                           >   CONFIG_PREEMPT_TIMES=y

Obbvios some diffs in processors (ripped them). No ISA in my system, found nothing bizzarre yet
Code:

CONFIG_APM=y                        <
CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y                     <
CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF=y               <

Found these settings to work with my motherboard, (poweroff issue)
Code:

CONFIG_PARPORT=y                     |   # CONFIG_PARPORT is not set
CONFIG_PARPORT_PC=y                     <
CONFIG_PARPORT_PC_CML1=y                  <
# CONFIG_ISAPNP is not set                  |   CONFIG_ISAPNP=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=y                     |   # CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM_SIZE=4096                  |   CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM_SIZE=8192
CONFIG_PACKET_MMAP=y                     |   # CONFIG_PACKET_MMAP is not set

Yeah, i have a printer connected to my parallellport. Here's my loop device support mentioned earlier...
Code:

# CONFIG_SYN_COOKIES is not set                  |   CONFIG_SYN_COOKIES=y
# CONFIG_IDEDISK_MULTI_MODE is not set               |   CONFIG_IDEDISK_MULTI_MODE=y

What is multimode anyway ?
(below): I also have a real SCSI adapter with HD and CDRW, differs from your 'puter, but run gentoo from an IDE HD
Code:

# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI is not set               |   CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=y
CONFIG_IDE_TASK_IOCTL=y                     |   # CONFIG_IDE_TASK_IOCTL is not set
                           |   # CONFIG_IDE_TASKFILE_IO is not set
                           >   CONFIG_BLK_DEV_ISAPNP=y

# CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS is not set                  |   CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y

I've dropped those ptys
Code:

CONFIG_PRINTER=y                     |   CONFIG_UNIX98_PTY_COUNT=256
CONFIG_MOUSE=y                        |   # CONFIG_MOUSE is not set

CONFIG_INPUT_ADI=y                     |   # CONFIG_INPUT_ADI is not set

Actually im not using as PS2 mouse or gameport, but I wanted support for it, it goes modular next compile
Code:

# CONFIG_INTEL_RNG is not set                  |   CONFIG_INTEL_RNG=y
# CONFIG_AGP_INTEL is not set                  |   CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y

I have no idea what a watchguard (dog?) card is...
Code:

CONFIG_AGP_VIA=y                     |   # CONFIG_AGP_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM is not set                     |   CONFIG_DRM=y
# CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS is not set                  |   CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS=y

Do you need autofs or cramfs (no idea what it is) ???

# CONFIG_NTFS_FS is not set                  |   CONFIG_NTFS_FS=m

                           >   CONFIG_NTFS_RW=y
CONFIG_PROC_CONFIG=m

NB: Hmm can't remember what PROC_CONFIG is...
You've already fixed DEVFS_FS, & mount at boottime now

Apart from different VGA's I've not seen anything bizarre in the last section.
When recompiling, do install kernelsource from scratch, saw something about loosing patches if not
If your problem is kernel related, I'd would be playing with those USB settings.

hi

I emereged the gentoo-sources again and recompiled it a few times without getting a clean boot. (also without usb features ..).
Tday i installed the whole system from stage3 again. But there is the same failure again.

The funny thing is that i get a clean boot from my winxp, knoppix and the live-cd - but not with my kernel.

Ihave a p4 2,4 with an asus p4pe board audigy platinum and ati 8500. Does anybody has a clue ??

I tried installing Gentoo (used the 1.4 rc2 CD) from Stage 1 on a Dell Cpi PII 400 laptop.
I'm quite confident my kernel is OK (I've done it a few times in my time) and the CD boots fine but I can't get the laptop to boot:
It hangs right about the point where the rc scripts should start running (so hardware detection runs, I get the NET messages and then some PCI messages I haven't seen before.
I removed all scripts from the default runlevel, except local.
This is the second time I install Gentoo with the 1.4 rc2 CD. The first time it was when the CD first came out and then everything worked ok. I had to break off the install (due to time constraints :)) and restarted it last weekend. I had reached the grub configuration point then, but I had to recompile the kernel (cause I forgot something)After doing

emerge sync
emerge -u world

doing

make menuconfig

came back with a "I can't find gcc" error. "Ooops", I thought, "I screwed up" and started the whole thing from scratch.
Doing everything the way it is described in the install guide from stage 1 (and writing everything down) I came to the kernel compile step and there I got the gcc command not found error again. This time I knew that gcc was installed so one soft link later make menuconfig worked fine.
After that I did the metalog, vcron steps and emerged pcmcia and reiserfsprogs, configured grub and rebooted only to have the boot sequence hang. I recompiled the kernel a couple of times (I used the gentoo sources) removing stuff like USB all pretty much in vain.
"Damn", I thought (been doing a lot of thinking lately), "I had hopes for this one". I have to note that I tried to boot the CD on an AMD 450 K6-2 on a Gateway mobo and it would crash with a kernel panic.
If somebody can get me out of this hang I'll be very gratefull - I like Portage very much and don't want to go back to a binary distro :)

Yes, this smells like a kernel configuration issue...

Please upload&link to a site where we could have a look at your current
.config (keeping this threadsize down)

I'll have another look at the result if you want me to.

From reading your posts I know you are quite familiar with
a) chroot'ing into your current nonworking gentoo install
b) keeping a copy of last .config
c) cleaning your build environment (clean, mrproper etc)
d) installing fresh source w/ patches
e) not forgetting to mount boot before copying fresh bzImage from arch
:D
