Hi there,
I am new to Linux. The question might sound stupid, but I really cannot find any help, all my friends are Microsoft fans. I've read most of the installation message from this forum, but it seems that nobody has boot problem. Really hope I can get help from here.
I downloaded the iso and burn to CD, switch boot from CDROM,.......I did anything by the installation document, but I just cannot see root prompt. Please advise what I did wrong? Thank you very much!
My system is...
------------------------------
OS:W2K Advance Server
AMD k7 1000MHZ
256MB PC-133 SDRAM
20GB HD (IDE)
16MB Graphics
52X CDROM
Intel NIC |

You need to provide a bit more information here. Are there any error messages? How far does the boot get before it fails? |

Also, wondering if you have you BIOS set to boot from CDROM?
If you don't know how to do this....
You usually start your computer and hold down the "delete" key on your keyboard. It brings up the BIOS settings configuration screen.
Find the "Boot" section and set the first location from which to Boot to ATPI CD ROM.
Of course, you have to set it back to the Hard drive or Floppy (wherever you want to start your boot). When you are building Gentoo you often have to switch back and forth.
Don't know if this is your problem, but hope this helps. _________________ Boredom is a personal Defect

Thanks for your prompt reply.
Yes, I did set BIOS boot from CDROM, and the error message I got is "Searching for boot record from CDROM - not found". Any idea? |

Sounds as though you didn't burn a bootable disk.
An ISO image is one which is bootable and actually can mount it and see all the files structured underneath it.
Once you finish burning the CD, check to see if you can see the Gentoo files (not just one big *.iso file) burned on the CD.
Hope this helps. _________________ Boredom is a personal Defect

Below are the files in my LiveCD. Yes, it is not only 1 iso file, but with main .cloop file and 2 folders.
* livecd.cloop
* Folder - isolinux
-> boot.cat
-> boot.msg
-> gentoo
-> gentoo.lss
-> help.msg
-> initrd
-> isolinux.bin
-> isolinux.cfg
* Folder - gentoo
-> stage1-x86-1.4_rc2.tbz2
I read an article said that if I cannot boot from CDROM, I might have a buggy BIOS. What does this mean? Will this be a problem? (My motherboard is SiS k730) |
