The first problem is that I have no sound on my Ultra2.
I have sound on one ultra2, but not the other.
I have the right driver loaded (Sun CS4231), and my configs are the same on both machines
the one with functional sound is running a 2.4 kernel, while the one with no sound is
running a 2.6 kernel.

The system seems to think the sound works, I get /dev/sound/dsp, and I get a mixer (kmix and smixer both appear to work)
but there is no sound output, even if I just cat something to /dev/sound/dsp.

The other problem is sound files. If I take an ogg file that I know works
and try to play it on my Ultra2, completely aside from the fact that
there is no sound output, a 5 minute song plays in about 30 seconds in any player
(mplayer, xmms).

So there is the issue of no sound output, and there is the issue of timing of playback.
Also of note, mplayer plays mpeg4 avi's just fine (minus sound output). It is only
music that it seems to have a problem with.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try playing with audioctl!

I always had to unmute the card first!

I had thought sound was broken for sun's with a 2.6 kernel, that is why I stuck with the 2.4 kernel on the machine I wanted sound on.

here is a post that has some info on this:

very bottom post also has a link to a mailing list archive
