I think it would be a good string to have everyone list their favorite open source wares (pkgs) and what they use them for. There's just soooo many. I'd like, for an example, to know what a good equivalent to DreamWeaverMX would be. BlueFish just isn't cutting it.

Well, it's an idea anyway. Bring ideas. Thanx

There is table of software's equivalents http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/. Also there is russian version http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft/. The first one is translated version of the second so it may be out-of-date

<pro microsoft rant>

hey antonik, I have some problems with your list. I hope you aren't using the '>' to indicate 'greater than'. If you are I can only assume you are either extremely naive, or just plain ignorant. Just because it is made by microsoft doesn't mean that it is EVIL! Like it or not microsoft has come out with some impressive code.

And just on a side not amsn > msn? Are you crazy, from my short lived usage of amsn I found it to be the worst program ever!

The MSN module for GAIM is far superior, but is still lacking much functionality that the real MSN client offers.

It is fine to be a linux geek, but give credit where credit is due.

</pro microsoft rant>

whoa, looking back I see that you rated evolution fairly poor. I would go out on a limb and say that evolution is the single best piece of software made purely for linux.

yes i am using the > for greather than and < less than.

what code is that?

i dont care who made it. all i care is qualiaty/stability/let me do what i want to do with it and the source for the code, not having to pay for it or any other comercial stuff. (the four freedoms) if a program doensnt have it, even if it will do something before i want it do that, i wont like it, and i wont use it. but thats just me.
i never said a program is evil.

msn is lacking the funcionality to send more than one file at a time and to show how many % of the file has been transfered, also to be able to send to a user who sends a file to you.
and to see when someone closes there window.
none of the above i cant do with the ms msn.
amsn is better than the msn gaim module for me i dont need icq or the other stuff it offers...
why do you think its the worst program ever?

its just my opinion, you may think whatever.

i dont know if i am a linux geek or any other thing... i dont care.

ncftp > ftp, ncftp
kbear, gftp > cuteftp
k3b > nero burning rom
OOo > M$ office

p.s. that page is really nice and informative, but not very up-to-date (flash, et al)

Haven´t tried FlightGear, but it appears to be a good alternative to M$ Flight Simulator (Even though that is the only MS software I like).

Octave makes an acceptable replacement for Matlab, but I still need a equivalent for Simulink.

I think that Microsoft programs aren't always worse, but sometimes they are. Everybody has a right for his own opinion anyhow. Problem with comparing programs is that you are used to certain programs, and when you have to switch, the new program is difficult to learn (although it can be better). Compare switching from Photo Shop to Gimp.
Anyway, there are some programs I run on windows, which I don't have a substitute for in Linux (hence a dual-boot), but these generally are programs I have to install for my study of which they only have a windows version.

Well, these are the program I generally use:

MS Office : OpenOffice
TextPad : Kate
Explorer file manager : Konqueror
use Opera and Phoenix as browser on both Windows as XP
Matlab : have installed, but not yet tried Octave
IntelliJ IDEA on both
Winamp : xmms
divxplayer, streaming audio : mplayer
MikteX : TeteX
Lyx : nothing
trillian : gaim

Of these programs, I only think that MS Office is faster (therefore easier in use) and I like Trillian a lot (better than gaim). The other programs I like are equally good or better in Linux to my opinion.

Rem

P.S. Now I'm looking for a nice C++ developing environment. Any ideas (Kylix maybe)?

I checked out that site, and found some really cool programs i never heard of, But the thing that boggled my mind was this
Code:

GAMES       WINDOWS         EQIVALENT
Racing   Need For Speed      Tux Racer :).

Hahaha. See, we do have a sense of humor still if we use linux.
