when I open a *.cpp file with xemacs, the message buffer says

Quote:

mode c++ either does not exist or is not a known package

And also

Quote:

File mode specification error (error: "c++-mode)

Shouldn't xemacs have c++ support and fontification? What's wrong?

did you emerge app-xemacs/cc-mode ? This should contain the xemacs C++ support.
