So.. I work for a small company who produce Windows/Mac (and if I get my way linux) software... I'm used to doing the windows stuff and my boss gets on with the Mac side.. But recently he asked me to take over the Mac side as well, so I say "O.k. but it will difficult without having a Mac of my own" so he goes out and orders me a full loaded 12" Powerbook.
I think to myself "Sweet I can stick linux on it so I don't go insane having to use os x all the time."
So will I'm waiting for it to arrive I've been look around trying to find some info about installing/dual-booting linux on this thing.
But it seems its not going to be all that simple.. the graphics card for a start.. Hibernation etc..
So has anyone here tried installing Gentoo on one of these yet..
Has anyone managed to get a Geforce4 420 Go working with X yet..
And if not has anyone tried out the links in this posting yet?

Oh and one last thing can anyone else see any other protential problems I might run into?
Thanks for your time.

as far as I know.. the new powerbook is a whole new breed..
nvidia do not release ppc linux drivers for their cards, so there goes your 3d support at least.
it uses new ide controller (ata 100) it's ddr ram, and used faster firewire and newer wireless version..
there is another post about the new powerbooks.. have you done a search ? _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

Hmm I'm not to worried about 3D support/firewire/wireless, just so long as I can get X and a net connection.
I did find another thread mostly about the 17inch model's features, nothing I couldn't really have read off apple site..
Thanks thou..
And thanks homar for that link.. looks promising. |

Yeah I know
Hmmm wonder if I could have talked my boss into getting me the 17" instead.. as the 17" screen, backlit key's, 1Gb Mem would have been really cool <drool> .. But I some how doubt I could have since it would of meant I'd of had a better machine than he did
Oh well looks like I'm in unknown territory with this one then... so when it turns up I'll play around with different things and see what crops up and report back to this forum with the results... |

I was told that a 2.4.20-ben5 kernel, and the xfree 'nv' driver from 4.2.99.4 work with these machines. THere are patches coming for 4.2.99.4 ebuild to include this driver, should know more soon. |
