The strangest thing happened. I was trying out IM (Instant Messenger) clients to see if I could find one that I liked (Kopete turned out to be it) and ended up emerging Ickle.
Ickle works as a GNOME applet. I ran ickle_applet and got all sorts of errors about not running a GNOME compliant window manager and whatnot, and then the GNOME toolbar appeared at the top of my KDE screen. It had the clock, the menu--everything. Weird. My console that executed Ickle is also displaying the following message for some reason, over and over:
Message: resetting focus according to XGetInputFocus() for 16784294

Anyway, I thought this was strange and interesting and thought others might find it the same.

ickle works as standalone gtk+ application too:

export USE="-gnome"
emerge ickle
unset USE

then you'll get "ickle" binary, not the applet, and that works nicer with KDE.
