Getting up to 60 FPS on my pentium3 500Mhz (aka SLOW) with GF2MX
With Debian I used to get 25FPS...
This screenie isn't really realistic, because there's nothing moving at the moment there, but in the field I'm getting a good 35-40FPS at all times. That's really cool, on my system at least...

I get constantly above 70fps with athlon 1,2ghz, 256mb ram and gf2mx...In fact, that's slow but for a gf2mx it's ok |

Cool, I hope one day I can afford myself a better system
I can't play much of today's new games anyway
But Q3's still a lot of fun.. |

yes, Quake3 is really cool.
My big mistake was the gf2mx - in comparison to a gf2gts it performs really really bad..MX are just for having mass pc's which can be sold as high-tech (with brand name nvidia as if they would use "good" hardware it's more expensive and not interesting for the standard user anymore). |

Ah, yes I see
I used to have a TNT2, this GF2MX is actually one of my friend's. I could borrow it because he has a better card. So that's why I'm using it
Any ideas on what would be a good card to buy nowadays? |

I get better performance from quake3 running wine (and extreamly much better using quake3 native linux version) than windows (and my windows has up to date drivers and is rather tweaked).
When games runs better using wine than on real windows I think wine has really taken a big step forward, more and more games are emulated, more and more games comes out with support for linux
a better world is comming |

i get about 5 more fps on windows xp, detonator drivers on quake3a, no tweak at all, than on linux
also.. very weird problem.. the mouse on linux is so funky ! i enabled dga supported, etc loaded right modules, etc etc but the mouse is still so strange in linux (in fact i found that when i move it very slowly in window le cursor move pixel by pixel while in linux it doesn't move at all -> my XFree mouse resolution is 1600 (very high, yes) |

oh, i googled a lot, searched every linux site i could know of and i know almost every problem that users had in the past now
but it's not one of theses
it seems i'm the only affected by the "bug", and had the same under debian before
but it's not even limited to quake, it's just that i really feels it in quake where super precision matters
it's also in x but quite usueable
also i wonder
do you guys use GPM ?
(i don't !)
it is usually installed by defaults on distros
may be i should try that (last thing i didn't tried)
or may be none of u ever wondered why there were thoses windows players who are so good at quake you think they cheat ? (and they don't=) because it's like, i can play, but u know when the other guy is far and u rail, you want to move the move like 1-2pixels and it just doesn't move (it's very little) while in windows it moves
or may be it's my mouse ? like the ps/2 drivers aren't very well coded (i saw a thread about this in a mailing list, but the guy who coded that part said like 'it's my drivers and it works well, you pro windows troll') |

Hmm. I'm using an optical M$ USB Intellimouse (/dev/input/mice and IMPS/2 drivers) and it's quite sensitive, wich is good for Q3 |

on mine i can move like 10millimeters before the cursor moves
i have also a ms optical explorer usb which i plan to try, hope will work good
also mouse drivers seems renewed in kernel 2.5.x so i will try that too (just hope the usb filesystem breakage i had with my modem are resolved;)
otherwise.. well.. the mouse works perfect in window, so i think i'd trust that guy who said it was linux driver probs :/ |

|
|
I saw someone complaining about the Geforce 2 MX being a slow card. I'm pretty happy With my Abit Siluro Geforce 2 T400 (64MB, video output). Then again, I'm no hardcore gamer who needs all the edge. When games become too demanding there is a solution!
Here's a link to one of the webpages that show how to hardware overclock your Geforce 2 card. This is done simply by moving a couple of resistors. It will then act as a Geforce Quadra card and give as much as 41% speed increase in games. Look at the stats for yourself:!:
http://www.tweakhardware.com/guide/quadro/
An easier way to get a drop or two more juice out of your card is to software overclock it. Overclocking should give a few extra percent, more if you ad a fan or larger heatsink to it. Poking around on Google should give you the basic idea of what's to gain. But be careful - you might damage your card trough overheating! |

hey switched my gfmx2 to quadro, it's pretty cool:))
still need a way to have decent mouse but cool=)
btw i find the precision good if i put threshold minimum
but hell the mouse is slow and of course with acceleration it's not useable with so low threshold... damnit..
i'm trying to poke with mouserate of my ps2 now .. |

or to measure it properly
console
timedemo 1
demo <demoname goes here>
that'll run a performance test so you can get more measurable numbers |

Mouse SUCKS In Games (QuakeIII, FPS XY)
many games use DGA mouse for mouse input in games. this is similar to the directmouse thing in windows. all versions of XFree86 prior to 4.0.2 had a somewhat broken DGA 1 mouse handling. If you want decent mouse performance upgrade to 4.0.2.
in addition to that, you'll have to load the DGA extension. many config tools disable that by default. use:
Code listing 27
Load "extmod"
instead of a SubSection if you want to make sure it gets loaded. after that, you'll have to enable DGA mouse in the game itself. for QuakeIII this comes down to
Code listing 28
seta in_dgamouse "1"
in the QuakeIII config file (~/.q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg).
----------------------------
Maybe this can solve yer mouse problems? |
