Hi

Look at this: http://www.apple.com/macmini/

Thats looks very nice! Maybe I will buy it that I can play with MacOS or I use it with Gentoo Linux ;-)

What do you think?

Holy crap! They actually did it! For $500 I may have to buy a Mac.

EDIT:
The radeon 9200 isn't exactly hot stuff anymore, but if you want to run Linux on it, it will work with the X.org open-source radeon driver. A good thing, too since I think the binary ati drivers are x86 only.

Triple the price though!

Xbox media center more than sufficient for me, it streams web radio, itunes, iFilms, apple movie trailers, you name it.

True, the only thing that bugs me about the xbox is the lack of a damn 'on' button for the remote. Everything else is perfect.

nothing new. i can put togeather a similar x86 machine for less.
this is a very bad move if they want to compete in the low end market, no monitor and keyboard when all the other low end pc makers have monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer included for about the same price.

the only good things about it are that is is quiet and small.

I always replace those things with stuff I want anyways.
Those low end systems always have the worst keyboard and mice I have every seen. After switching to a logitech MX700 it's amazing how much less wrist pain I get.

I'm not sure of the actual dimensions but that would sure be nice for a student in a tiny dormroom if you attached a nice LCD.

Yeah, this is a very good move if Apple wants to move into the low end market. Everyone I know who would benefit from the Mac-Mini already has a decent monitor, keyboard and mouse from their old computer - why should they waste money to get the usual POS monitor that dell ships with their $500 computers?

It's also pretty nice that it has a Radeon 9200. It's nothing special but good enough to play games like WC3 and WOW, probably the most popular Mac games. It also comes with functional bluetooth which is awesome, pair this up with either the Logitech or Microsoft Bluetooth mouse and you've got yourself one hell of a setup.

This seems to be wrong. On the german page i read the following:

http://www.apple.com/de/macmini/design.html

Quote:

Dank eines winzigen Lüfters arbeitet der Mac mini so leise [...]

... because of a small fan the mac mini works so quietly ...

1. i mentioned nothing about spyware.

2. i stand corrected on the fan

3. the toy is aimed at people who don't have a pc yet are suposed to have a keyboard, mouse and flatscreen moniter around(says nothing about having a dvi to vga converter) either way joe blow is going to look at this think wtf no monitor, keyboard, and mouse? then move on to a similar(and argueably faster but thats debateable) pc that has all that in the $500 price range plus printer and maybe speakers.

i won't be surprised if their emac out sells this.

I'm not sure that it is aimed at people who dont have a pc. Apples entire marketing strategy right now is to try and get people to switch.

Joe blow ( who probably will have a computer already ) will think "They are so small and fast. There is no spyware. I want ten, why can't I buy them on the home shopping network."

Huh? Why does anybody need so much ram. And on a mac? not only does OSX use less ram than windows, unless your doing gaming or graphics intensive work, you simply don't need that much ram. 256M is plenty usable and fits well within in the scope of that machine. and who cares if the warrenty is broke, the machine will never break anyway.

In my experience, 256MB is not enough memory for a Mac (with OS X, anyway). They have run much better with 512MB and even 1GB.

That said, I finally have a good option to satisfy my Mac-at-home appetite. :D
