The output of the program
w
and
who
is incorrect on my Gentoo Linux computer.
The output produced are:
frank@babe frank $ w
11:20:21 up 3:54, 0 users, load average: 0.79, 0.25, 0.08
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
frank@babe frank $ who
frank@babe frank $ who -a
Feb 5 07:26 8 id=si term=0 exit=0
system boot Feb 5 07:26
run-level 3 Feb 5 07:26 last=S
Feb 5 07:26 701 id=l3 term=0 exit=0
LOGIN tty1 Feb 5 08:02 2384 id=c1
LOGIN tty2 Feb 5 07:26 1558 id=c2
LOGIN tty3 Feb 5 07:26 1559 id=c3
LOGIN tty4 Feb 5 07:26 1560 id=c4
LOGIN tty5 Feb 5 07:26 1561 id=c5
LOGIN tty6 Feb 5 07:26 1562 id=c6
Feb 5 07:26 1563 id=x term=0 exit=0
frank@babe frank $ uname -a
Linux babe 2.4.19-gentoo-r10 #1 Tue Feb 4 09:04:25 NZDT 2003 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1600+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
frank@babe frank $ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.3/specs
gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release)
My C/C++ optimization flags are:
CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"
My Gentoo is bsed on the version 1.2 ISO built from stage 3
I emerged to the latest patches versions, so why is the output incorrect ?
In particular the command
w
should NOT show 0 users are logged in.
I value stability and my system has been rock stable but this output appears to be totally incorrect....coming from FreeBSD this worries me a bit.
I like Gentoo but this is troublesome...any suggestions or further questions ?? _________________ Sophisticated, cultivated, technically superior,

Output from w on mine shows:
Code: |
16:03:38 up 5 days, 4:08, 1 user, load average: 0.18, 0.12, 0.35
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
aja :0 - Thu11am ? 0.00s 0.09s -:0

Which seems correct. Also correct on 2 other boxes here.
Suspect it is 'gentoo on your box' not 'gentoo'
/edit:
If you login on another virt. terminal (i.e be logged in more than once) does it show up? |

This has been asked several times, though I don't know if an answer has been given. Will add a link as soon as I find the thread.
