I know that you usually need to re-emerge nvidia-* and alsa-* when switching kernels, but is it neccessary when only hopping from nitro-source revision to revision?

Very nice, only problems with this kernel aren't related to the patching itself.

I get the same error :( Nevermind I'll stick with r1 for now - which is absolutely fantastic, great work Darckness :)

Darckness, thank you for your efforts!

This was my first try at nitro sources. The last kernel I used was love and it's pretty outdated (2.6.8-love*).

The kernel seems to work without a hitch. Granted, I as of yet do not know if alsa works (I have no speakers currently) nor have I tested out cd burning (my previous kernel broke this), but all in all it works great.

I'd love to see the config-nr-tty-devices patch in future patchsets - it's still available at sepi.be if needed.

Hi. I'm Dustin. Long time lurker/nitro user. First time poster. Anyway...

I'm running a UDEV system. When I boot, the boot screens tell me CONFIG_HOTPLUG was not set for this kernel twice. However...
Code:

ls -l ./linux
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 21 Dec 31 01:05 linux -> ./linux-2.6.10-nitro2

(Proof my /usr/src/linux symlink is pointing to the correct sources)

Code:

less ./linux/.config
# General setup
#
CONFIG_LOCALVERSION=""
CONFIG_SWAP=y
CONFIG_SYSVIPC=y
CONFIG_POSIX_MQUEUE=y
# CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT is not set
# CONFIG_SYSCTL is not set
# CONFIG_AUDIT is not set
CONFIG_LOG_BUF_SHIFT=14
CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y
...

When I log in, it tells me that I'm using 2.6.10-nitro2 as well. And, I compiled (for the first time) fbsplash into my kernel (all other times I didn't bother with it), and got it working...so I *know* I'm using the proper kernel.

...please advise....

Very nice. I just rebooted into -nitro2 and it feels even quicker than the -nitro1.

For those of you feeling adventurous (or dumb...) both reiserfs4 and the binary nvidia driver work with 4kb stacks and register arguments turned on. I'll report here if I run into any major stability problems.

Edit:
3D performance is *terrible* with this setup. UT2004 went from being smooth as butter to choking on 1-on-1 botmatches. I'm rebuilding without register arguments to see if that helps...

It's caused by the sk98lin driver because I forgot to change one of the stupid errors in the patch. Essentially, you need to apply this patch:

Code:

I've uploaded a new version of the nitro patch which has this fixed.

Teh Penguin D00d: do you have hotplug emerged? Try checking a few of the udev faqs on these forums just to make sure you've got all the options set that you need to. I've been using udev for so long that I forgot exactly what they are.

wdreinhart: I'm not really sure what's causing that; I'm playing several 3D games quite flawlessly with this release using regparm and 4k stacks. Admittedly though, I am not on reiser4. Perhaps it's just a bug with that?

I've got hotplug enabled. Been using hotplug for a few months now. However, I noticed I don't have coldplug...and in the topic of #gentoo...

hotplug not loading modules on bootup? emerge coldplug; rc-update add coldplug boot

So, I'll be trying that after my emerge world -e finishes...

I'll let you know how I luck out. Thanks.

I've poked at it a little more, and it's sound that's causing ut2k4 to stutter and jerk, not 3D acceleration. Compiling with regparam and 4k stacks turned off doesn't change anything. Looks like I've been bitten by the non-deterministic, non-reproducable ALSA bug that people were complaining about in the last -nitro thread...

Don't know why you got that, It still works perfectly well and I've had 12 downloads since you posted this at 8.56 am (assuming you are on GMT - it is now 9.19am).

I'm also not sure what a '416 Requested Range Not Satisfiable' error actually means....

Let me know if you are still getting the error (as I say, others are still getting it and I can see no error, but would like to fix any problems with the hosting of it as soon as possible).

Hm, where can i get the newest patchfile or ebuild now? It seems the one you mentioned in your first posting isn't the newest, because i can still choose the mouse polling in menuconfig.

The newest patchfile is on PickledOnion's site. The configurable mouse polling has two ways that it can be set; in the kernel config, and in modules.conf.
