there is/was a beta 1.3 listed on the servers of Gentoo - is this going to be released any time soon as a final? I would love to get my hands on it as I want to 'test' this on an old box lying around at work.

Well 1.3 image is mostly for GCC 3.1, and its already being tested, check the GCC3 forum. Btw. don't think you need any use for gcc 3.1 on an old system, which won't take advantage of the new compiler flags athlon / pentium 4.... In the GCC3 forum there is also an detailed explanation on how to use it, which boils down to doing everything the same then do a wget to get the tar file and just use this instead, but just check the GCC3 forum,..... could also offcourse use a seperate partition to store the new tar file, well thats what I always do,.....
