I just upgraded from a regular Athlon to an XP. If I change the cpu optimization, will it recompile everything, or will just the packages I emerge from here be optimized? Might be a dumb question, but I don't see it posted anywhere.

Just that packages you emerge from now on will use the new optimizations. This includes any updates that are installed as well.

If you want to have everything optimized for your new processor you can do a
Code:

emerge --emptytree world

which will recompile all the packages in your world file and all their dependencies. IIRC The only packages that will not be reemerged are those that you emerged with the --oneshot option. If you never use --oneshot or don't even know what it is ;) then all the packages on your system will be reinstalled.
