I'm trying to install gentoo on a Compaq Proliant 5000 with 4 Pentium Pro processors. The machine boots from the CD, I'm using the x86 image, and the machine has plenty of RAM (384MB).
However, just after the ramdisk loads, I get:
Kernel Panic: Out of memory and no killable processes.
The machine also has a Compaq SCSI RAID array, although I cannot imagine why that would make a difference.
Any ideas? I'm completely frustrated.

Found the answer. Turns out that all the available memory wasn't being detected automatically. Had to add:
kernel mem=384M
to the boot prompt. worked just fine |
