Is there any other information in the thread that might be helpful to the developers? Would you be willing to file a bug report and respond to their questions? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Unfortunately I'm in no position to test anything. I don't have much of a system left. /usr is gone, so I'd suggest that people stay away from emerge-websync until someone can isolate the problem on a test machine. |

SHIT, just happened to me.
I'm sure gentoo developers are aware that this can not happen ever again.
This is not a bug, nor a virus, its more like a terrorist attack.
In near future I'd like to be provided with a script which only downloads the latest poratge from rsync servers.
I think I'll do the "tar -xvjpf ..." part myself.
Executing emerge-webrsync with root privileges (no other choice really) has certainly proven to come with extreme costs.
Very disappointed.
If I was one of gentoo admins, I would have sticked a big alert note at forums.gentoo.org this is very serious. |

Sorry punter, I probably should have put something in News & Announcements. There's an announcement there now.

fixed with -r11 | emerge-webrsync is part of the gentoolkit package, so I beleive "-r11" is referring to the recent r11 gentoolkit. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I too got raped by this one. Unfortunately, it happened on a production box. I had to do some upgrades to some packages, and getting the latest portage tree seemed like a good idea at the time. Can't imagine how this bug got through, but I'm out several work days. Guess I'll go back to my old manual method of downloading and extracting the file.

Me too, only it was on Dec.28. I don't know if it was my stupidity (I was messing with autoclean) or another problem, I just know my entire install was nuked. I've been forced to use M$ crap until now, when I have broadband again. *ugh* |

... for posing such a simple oversight with major consequences when I raised the suggestion to set up emerge-webrsync to clean-up the portage tree.
I apologise all round. (Kinda lame but I can't do much else.)
That's what happens when you don't test I guess. Sigh! Still I would have thought it might have been picked up in the review process before it was committed to the portage tree. Its a pretty obvious and stupid once you actually look at it.
[Needless to say, I just got caught by the same thing... One reason why I haven't cleaned up after myself was not being near my machine for a few days.]
Again, apologies to you all. (Can't accept blame for such mishaps before January 16 though...) |

Sadly it's blunders like this that prevent me from promoting Gentoo over other distros to people I know for their systems. If I hadn't setup a cron job to backup stuff regularly I'd have been majorly burned by this. |

The problem was fixed in gentoolkit-0.1.17-r11. If you have that version, or newer, you should be ok. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Is this an issue that was related to gentoo or to linux? What about other distributions? |

DRTProxy, this post is very obsolete. It's dated over 3 years in the past. The issue has been resolved a long time.
But to answer your direct question, only Gentoo would be affected, and only users of emerge-webrsync using that particular release of the package. |

Would it be a good idea to sandbox emerge-webrsync so that it only touches /usr/portage? |

@shentino,
did you have any issue with webrsync in the last 10 years regarding this?
Or is your awakening of this historical thread just bullshit? |
