|
|
Hi,
I'm having trouble finding the java plugin for firefox on my blade100. I've emerged the jdk (blackdown) but the plugin directory is empty. Is there something in portage to emerge or is there a bin for gentoo/sparc/java?
thanks,

(I am on a x86 so it may be a different issue)
when you say the pluggin directory is empty do you mean
/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.*/jre/plugin/* ?
Because what you might need todo is copy the plugin file from there to your firefox plugin directories (I have one directory under $HOME/.firefox and one under $HOME/.mozilla/firefox) in your home directory. _________________

Code: | cd /usr/lib/MozillaFirefox/plugins
ln -s $JAVA_HOME/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so . |
this is the standard solution; i dont use blackdown, but i assume the solution would be congruent |

Yes, my /opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.1/jre/plugin/sparc/ is empty. I can't just download a binary from java.sun.com cause i'm running gentoo on sparc. The blackdown is what emerged with 'emerge jdk'.
I've been looking (not very hard) for a different package to emerge...
Thanks |

Currently, there is no other working java plugin for SPARC.
Blackdown has a plugin, but it was subject to certain security vulnerabities as detailed in GLSA 200411-38. As Blackdown didn't and still doesn't have a fixed version of the JDK or JRE for SPARC, we removed the plugin from being installed.
Kaffee, while coming along nicely, is not ready for prime time. Additionally I don't know if it even contains a browser plugin yet. |

Any luck on getting a firefox plugin for sparc yet? It's 2006...so don't know if this thread is dead or not.
Cheers,

Blackdown isn't getting new JVMs out for linux/sparc lately and the current one is broken in many ways (security vulnerabilities, doesn't work with the new toolchain).
That's the reason it's completely masked for 2006.0+ profiles.
Don't bother unmasking it - it just won't work. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

Cool enough. Are there any other methods you know of to get java support running on the sparc platform for gentoo though? I personally care not what version/distribution/etc. I'm just stuck trying to run another java based webapp and can't use any of my sparc gentoo systems to do so.
(I love the irony of java not running on sun hardware) ;o)

You could use the "old" stuff (profile/toolchain) - it'll work when it doesn't segfault.
But that's going away eventually because of open security bugs that really can't be solved.
Aiming at kaffe or sablevm may be an option, though currently they can't be used as the primary vm because of versioning conflicts/limitations. Also they're probably not as complete. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias
