I don't know what this way would be, but I'd really like to see a way to nominate or flag the most helpful posts.

Sometimes it's incredibly hard to find that one post in the thread that nails the issue (or takes the time to link to all of the resources everyone else has suggested), especially when the post spans across several pages. Maybe even something like the Experts Exchange forum, where one can tag certain posts as "accepted answer."

This is arguably a lot of work (something I'm of course not volunteering to do), so perhaps one answer might be to just start encouraging people to log back in update the first post as to what the solution is/was.

I agree. PHPBB is nice because it means gentoo devs can concentrate work on gentoo and not have to code a forum. But the gentoo forums are rather large and complex. I think that making a custom forum might be a good direction to go in after the new website is up. Maybe adding better search facilities, allowing posts to be marked with various flags like [solved]. And maybe redoing the categories a little bit. I can't tell you how many times I've thought really hard about which category to put something in only to have my post moved by a mod.

Very utopic, but I don't see this happening (at least in a couple years). We have had some good discussions about changing the board's software and we are still using phpBB vanilla, so changing to something completely new would be very hard to happen.
