How to duplicate a working Gentoo-system?

How can I duplicate my working Gentoo system?

I've compiled all the packages and the software which should be on the system. How can I make an "image" of the system software (not the user data) so that I can put it on a second system (or the same, if it breaks).

explains how to make your own stage tarball, so instead of using stage 1/2/3 use your own. I haven't tried it so i dont know how well it works

I'd guess there are a lot of files which I can skip which shouldn't be necessary.

Pointers please...
