So I just got a used laptop with Win2K on it. I burned the current P3 LiveCD 1.4-rc2. The live CD boots perfect and detects all sorts of ACPI sensors and what not. I got through all the installation phases, have a newly compiled kernel using the current gentoo-sources package as of 8 hours ago to build a new kernel. I include ACPI support. When I reboot, the computer gets to the line:
Code: | ACPI: Core Subsystem version [20011018] |
And stops. Doesn't go any further. Waited 20 minutes once to be sure. I originally had APIC enabled, remebered something about buggy Dell BIOSes, so I disabled that and recompiled the kernel. Locks again. I disable ACPI in the bios: locks. I disable ACPI in the kernel, recompile, and it boots fine. However, I want ACPI features and the kernel on the LiveCD went through the ACPI part just fine. After enabling debugging message I get this at bootup:
Code: |
tbxface-0099 [01] Acpi_load_tables : ACPI Tables successfully load
Parsing Methods:......................................................................................................
163 Control Methods found and parsed (589 nodes total)
ACPI Namespace successfully loaded at root c02d4480
ACPI: Core Subsystem version [20011018]
evxfevnt-0081 [02] Acpi_enable: : Transition to ACPI mode successful
Executing device _INI methods:......... |
9 dots, then lock. Suggestions? |

OK, so off the LiveCD the kernel shows:
Code: | ACPI: Subsustem revision 20021212 |
Which is NEWER than what's in the current gentoo-sources! Great... OK, which source tree to pick... there's the obvious acpi-sources. What exactly are lolo-sources? ck-sources seems to have the current ACPI patches plus some performs patches I like. Guess I'll give that tree a try and see how it turns out. |

In gentoo-sources 2.4.19-r10 there is support for a local use flag called acpi4linux. This will patch the kernel with the latest ACPI-sources, which may or may not work for you. Read the comments in /usr/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources/gentoo-sources-2.4.19-r10.ebuild and the Changelog. |

Ahhh, I didn't know that. I actually got gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r1 install and it's all working great now. Thanks! |
