I've been a Debian user for several years and I decided to move to Gentoo a few days ago.
emerge is a great tool, but I'm missing some of the apt-get/dpkg features.
How do I see the list of all the packages that are installed on my box ? I know that I can see the list by looking at /var/db/pkg, but it's not very convenient. I'm missing Debian's "dpkg -l".
How do I see the list of the files included in a given package (without looking at /var/db/pkg/.../CONTENTS), as well as a complete description (something detailed) ?
"emerge search blahblah" is great, but is there a possibility to either search against the installed packages or the uninstalled ones ?
What are the "marked" packages ? Is there a way to install them ?

Thanks.

Guess what? Good news! You CAN use qpkg, I'd assume it works just like it works with debian. You have to emerge the package it's in first though.

Code:
emerge gentoolkit

There are a few other programs in that package that help out package management as well.

Masked packages are packages that aren't known to be stable yet, conflict with a package you already installed, or a few other things I can't remember.

It's possible to install packages that are masked, but only ones that are masked for certain reasons. For the most part if it's masked you shouldn't mess with it unless you know what you are doing ;). Some one else will show up and explain masked packages and which ones you can "safely" install soon I'll bet.... lol

Thank you very much, this package does exactly what I want :D (its syntax is different from debian's dpkg though).
I think this package should be included in every Gentoo distribution.

gentoolkit is a proving ground for utilities that are eventually included in the portage package, at which point they become standard. For example, etc-update used to be part of gentoolkit, and it's now in portage. Perhaps qpkg will graduate someday.
