hello,

hopefully this will be my last question for this install :?

during the installation process i set my root password up. somewhere along the way it seems to have been lost. either the computer simply isn't recognising it or i typed it in wrong twice and didn't figure it out (doubt the latter).

how can i reset this now. i have booted up using the livecd and changed it with passwd (which it seems perfectly happy to let me do), have changed it when in / (i.e. in the ram as it were) and when that didn't work mounted the hard drives where the installation put the data and ran passwd in /mnt/gentoo/ (i.e. with /dev/hda1 mounted). neither has helped me.

any help would be appreciated.

steve

ok, i'm really sorry about this, i do it at work too, the moment i send the mail i realise how to do it, so sorry

for anyone who is interested, in the intial install i changed the password before i 'chrooted' to the installed files on /dev/hda*., so it looks like my root password was lost everytime the machine rebooted since it was only in the ram image and not in the installation per se. i went back using the livecd, mounted my drives and then chrooted /mnt/gentoo (as in the installation guied) and used passwd there....worked a treat.

sorry again to anyone who is irritated at me posting and then solving my own probs :(

steve

Not a problem. It helps noobs like me that do something similar fix this sort of problem.

Its more of an annoyance when someone posts a problem, solves it, and never liets anyone know how they did it.
