Is there a way for me to "permanently unmask" certain packages. E.g., when I comment out certain lines in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask (namely, the lines with kde-3.1_rc5) it's all good until the next sync, when the file is overwritten with the new package.mask. Can I use overlay or anything like that to override masking of certain packages, so that if I want kde-3.1_rc5 (or anything else) unmasked, it would stay that way?

Thanks.

in /etc/make.conf look for the option ACCEPT_KEYWORDS

I don't see ACCEPT_KEYWORDS in /etc/make.conf, but if I'm not mistaken that would allow me to unmask everything (something like ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"). I'm not interested in that, I only want to unmask select packages. If I misunderstood what you are suggesting, then I'm sorry, and, please, explain.

sorry i indeed misunderstood - u only want to unmask a few selected packages...

i dont think there is a regular way... what u could do is write a small script that reads your must-have-newest-packages-file, parse through /usr/portage/package.mask and deletes every line that matches one of those...

Or pray to your favorite deity (or offer to help carpaski) in the quest for sticky variables.

How about this post and/or bug #3252?
