I'm a relative n00b on the sparc platform. I recently got donated an old U5 to play with so I decided to build a development machine based around Gentoo to play with java and some network analysis tools. I've selected the 2.4 kernel, not sure of the stability of 2.6 on sparc.

The base system came up fine, once I'd figured out the sparc install instructions.

Now to get the java side working. I'm trying to emerge jre and jdk. I understand from the other forum posts that the blackdown jre/jdk should install ok. The jdk installed with a few warning messages. Problem is, I get the following error on 'emerge jre':
Code:
emerge /usr/portage/dev-java/blackdown-jre/blackdown-jre-1.4.1.ebuild
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) dev-java/blackdown-jre-1.4.1 to /
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-sparc-gcc3.2.bin
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-sparc-gcc3.2.bin...
tar: j2re1.4.1/man/ja: Cannot change ownership to uid 1000, gid 1000: No such file or directory
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

!!! ERROR: dev-java/blackdown-jre-1.4.1 failed.
!!! Function src_unpack, Line 49, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

Any ideas?

Hello hack.

Your problem seems to be just like mine was - >before< reading the manuals and doing a lot of searching.

try:

emerge glibc --update

That was the main reason for my problem. Earlier version just couldn't handle symbolic linkfiles. (at least in this case)

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately
Code:
gentooU5 root # emerge glibc --update
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> Auto-cleaning packages ...

>>> No outdated packages were found on your system.

 * GNU info directory index is up-to-date.

Any other ideas?

From some hint I found another update too.. =)

emerge gcc --update

But this is more like questshooting. Those were my tries before installing whole system from scratch and from stage1.

It seems I was having problems with emerge-webrsync. I've followed the advice elsewhere in this forum and used a manually downloaded snapshot to restore my portage tree, then 'emerge jre' installed the blackdown jre for me. A bit of manual 'ln -s' to put the linkage in for the mozilla plug-in and now all is working.
