How many of you use Linux on your main desktop system at work (dual booting doesn't count, u cheater  ).
What do you do? How big is your company?

I do! Pure Gentoo, no dual boot. (I do have another machine I run RedHat Advanced Server 2.1 on, because I need a certified platform for Oracle)
I do technical support on Oracle databases, we have over 40000 employees 
I run several Java based applications too, but most of our apps are run through a browser.

I do... when I'm working from home, that is. 
Though, now that I have a nice laptop, I can use it as a Swiss army knife of computers -- I can arrange any networking diagnostics or a variety of stopgap measures to restore functionality (routing, bridging, packet mangling) with the laptop and cables included in my nice 20-pound laptop bag. This box will more than likely become my primary workstation, simply because it's fast and small. (Plus, the LCD is wonderful with sub-pixel font rendering!)

I do It helps to be one of the Systems Admins and be tucked away in a corner. I do have a windows xp box too. Mostly because my company insists on deploying it later this year, and I need to familiarize myself with how to lock them (the users) out of things

| I do! I'm doing research at a University so have a relatively high degree of freedom. I use it mainly for 3d finite element modelling in FEMLAB (on top of matlab) and writing reports and papers in Lyx. |

I run a pure linux box at work. Debian for now. But I cowed the admins into giving me a separate root password for my box, so I can probably push them into letting me install Gentoo soon.

| Running !RedHat! on my company laptop, but will be moving it too Gentoo this weekend. Lotus Notes is the only concern but I have got it running under Wine okay. |

Desktop computers at work are Linux (r&d, services, support) and NT.
$I \in r\&d$.
We mainly develop server software under SuSE, Redhat, Slowlaris and NT/2000/XP.
Every time I have to switch to an NT box (for testing) I feel uncomfortable. |

I wonder if you are willing to share your experiences with Python/QT programming, because there is hardly any decent documentation to be found (afaik). For now I have been playing with wxPython, and that has been a wonderfull experience. |

I'm using pure gentoo on my work laptop, and on a majority of the servers at work. As we're a terminal server based environment, I can't get away with running it on the term servers (proprietary apps only for windows that wine can't handle).
The introduction of Linux into the corporate environment has been very widely accepted (at my work). Upper management likes the cost, I love the flexibility, and it's a hell of a lot more stable. Heh...that or I'm just biased.

| At work we have gentoo on our fileserver for a new development project, and the desktop systems for the developers are also Gentoo, as is the intended deployed system we're building. The ability to customise the installed image was perfect for this project as we have smallish HD's and have to squeeze every little bit out of the processor |

We use several linux boxen:
Old Slackware distro for mailserver (nobody wants to touch that sucker - if it ain't broken, don't fix it.)
Debian on a router/bridge between a windows and 2 mac networks (also to provide some security screening between our prepress studio and creative departement).
Gentoo on the machine I use for everything except design (that's mac's work).
(I have 3 linux boxen at home - Debian server, Gentoo desktop and LRP-soon to be LEAF-router. There is A LEAF router pending at my brother's house and an other on my wife's sister's home network)
Linux is just an OS, doing it's job.
I have impressive uptimes on all machines, except my desktop gentoo. I keep ripping hardware in and out, so I have to down it sometimes.
40 people at our company.
Most of them don't know that 2 important machines make everything tick. All of them complain about our server, which is NT2000 / dual PIII or something (Out IT departement manages that one. Fulll time job.). None of linux boxen is over PII 300, an noone notices them.
Although I am creative director at DDB one of our new customers recently DEMANDED a Linux/PHP instalation and site. Since I am the only one doing this sort of thing - my own web departement HIRED me to do the job. What is the world comming to these days...

gentoo linux only on my main desktop machine. i also have a separate windows 2000 box for 'exchange' email. when I get a spare moment, that machine will be dual booting with gentoo.
I work for ticketmaster.
The official company linux is redhat 7.2. we are dragging them to redhat 8 since that at least has gcc 3 but we developers can run what we want on our desks. the guy next to me uses suse 8.1. |
