I ran an emerge sync last night, then ran emerge -u --deep world (this included a new build of gcc as I recall). When I connected to my system this morning, I got the error:
Code:
 * You have Xft2.0 installed, but QT is linked against Xft1!
 *
 * Please fix this by remerging >=x11-libs/qt-3.1 and doing:
 *
 *   # emerge ">=x11-libs/qt-3.1"

!!! ERROR: kde-base/kdebase-3.0.5a-r1 failed.
!!! Function pkg_setup, Line 114, Exitcode 0
!!! You have Xft2.0 installed, but QT is linked against Xft1!

okay. So I ran emerge ">=x11-libs/qt-3.1", and got this:
Code:
python2.2: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I tried to do an emerge sync, then just an emerge with nothing else, and it still gets that library error.

My question is three-fold--are others having this problem? How did that happen, and how do I go about fixing it since I can't use emerge.

Yes. I'm having the same problem. Whatever I do with emerge, I get the "python2.2: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" error message after emerge -u deep world and new gcc. I've tried the solution listed at http://cvs.gentoo.org/~seemant/, but no luck. Can someone please look into it?

Is it like the problem reported on this thread?
