Hoooray! I changed from yahoo to freenet and it works again. I just don't want to use a my "real" email adress in a public forum, now I slowly diffuse over all free email providers ...

Thank you very much,

Frank

From time to time I get a notification email that sends me to a non-existant topic.

Just to let you know there's a hic-cough.

What happens here is that somebody replies to a topic and then either they or a moderator deletes their post before you get a chance to read it.

I know that this is a very old thread, but I have problems receiving notification e-mails.
Upon checking my profile it seems that everything is selected ok.

Btw: filtering is not the problem here. Even with checking my mail via webmail I don't receive anything which can be very annoying at times.

just a question - could anyone tell me the ip address of forums' outgoing SMTP server? or even better, give me headers that these forum sends?

EDIT: works for me now :-)

Same problem here, almost.
I received notifications until two days ago, and now I'm only receiving newer threads like this. What could be the prob? I haven't change anything to my profile or my computer, it just stopped. And I know that several of the topics I follow(ed) are answered multiple times every day.

The notification feature doesn't notify you every time a thread gets updated. It will notify you once and then hold any more notifications until you actually visit that topic.

The notifications have been working fine for me for the past few days, so I don't know that there is a server-side problem here.

I'm not getting any email notifications for the topics I'm watching. Not really a problem but I thought I'd mention it incase it might be a bigger problem somehow.

There's a good chance its related to your yahoo address, which filters spam. There's an announcement about it in the News & Announcements forum.

I get my mail with pop3 and don't have any spam filters turned on so I get everything, some just gets marked if they really think it's junk. I checked the web interface just incase too but there's nothing caught there..... anyway...

The forums say I'm logged in but they don't always show me as I'm here. When I'm in "Desktop Env." it says other people are browsing but not me. ;) So it probably doesn't know that I'm actually reading the messages I've got notices for. ? I cleared my cookies and logged out but it still seems to be that way. I did get an notice on this topic and and another now though so maybe it's working again. I also didn't see that there was a cookie for "forums.gentoo.org" but there should be one for the "remember me" option when logged in. Could be a konqueror problem, but I do notice I get "un-watched" from some topics from time to time but that isn't happening this time.

Same prob here since 21/10/04.

This has happened periodically before.

I suspected my hosting service is binning them as spam on the way in (before distributing them to my account)

I've removed the mail filter so see what happens. 8)

it has happened periodicially before but nothing for a day or 2, i set the filter to filter all blackbox@forum.gentoo.org to my inbox but it seems like they either aren't being sent or being stopped by Yahoo! before they are even thinking about going in my inbox.

I'll change my email address on my profile to see if its Gentoo related or Yahoo related

It must be yahoo or upstream from yahoo since my other mail account has been not getting some list related emails.

Can a mod or admin check to see if there are any bounced/rejected/blocked/etc emails coming back from yahoo or others?

I got some notices this morning but not from this one so sometime after 4:34 PDT and before 6:52 PDT it started working with the forums.gentoo.org domain. I started getting some email from other lists and earthlink yesterday evening. Since it wasn't just a Yahoo issue, it seems one of the anti-spam zealots was playing god for a day or two. I swear those guys cause more trouble than good sometimes.

*oooh I just got a notification from this topic and the other one I just replied too. :)

Glad everyone is receiving them again. Perhaps there were some hardware problems along the trip.

Yep mine have been coming through again for about the last half-hour or so (Sun pm 24.10.04)

so maybe it was "blackhole" that got blacklisted by some zealot and a lot of traffic was getting filter by routers.

Yeah, some zealot as you say , but dont forget if it was not for Microsoft's crap software being force-fed to the ignorant masses the word virus would still be a medical term and spam would still be something I would not feed to my dog (even if I had one).

:?

Anywas good news , and "next time" we will not blame Yahboo! 8)

There's reason to believe the "majors" -- or at least yahoo -- implement list blocking, or some other ineffective means of filtering.
[forums-announce] Yahoo refusing forums.gentoo.org mail..

OK fair comment , but the problem is larger than that.

I use my own, for real, domain-based non-yahoo email for the forums and always have , this is not the first time I have significant out-time with this problem.

I dont wish to labour the point but it may help you if you are not under the impression that it is just Yahboo blocking . Maybe they are picking up from RBLs elsewhere , who knows.

HTH

Anyway I am glad to be back in touch. Back to fix my php...

Yes there "was" a reason to suspect just Yahoo a year ago, but as it turned out this time it wasn't "just" Yahoo.

So this time:
Did the emails bounce back with a message in the header explaing why?
Did they just just vanish with no evidence on the gentoo.org mail server that there was a problem?
Did anyone check the mail server logs or whatever there is to check into this?

Even though the problem is gone for now there doesn't seem to be much in the way of answers of what was happening and how to prevent it again. Pointing to the topic about Yahoo a year ago is easy but it doesn't help when most likely this problem is different or there just isn't anyone to check and see if it is the same problem.

This is the best "bugs.forums.gentoo.org" we have so it's nice to track down some causes and solutions when possible. Does this need to be sent "upstream" to wherever/whomever that is? ;)

Attn MODERATORS

could we have the following phpBB mod included into gentoo forums?

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=100096

It would allow users to control the topics they are have watches on.

This would be VERY useful in view of the recent failure of notification msgs.

Considering that once a notification is sent no more noticiations are sent until the user visits the topic most of our watches are now useless.

In the longer term it would again lighten the load on the system . I must have about 50 dead old topics for which I could turn off the watch.

This official MOD would allow me to check-in to the frozen topics and also tidy my watch list.

I hope the suggestion meets with official approval!
