could somebody please be so kind and let me know if there are any files/folders which are safe to delete in this dir (created during the emerge process)? thanks. it seems to be enormously big 700+mb for only having gentoo, x and kde installed.

Gentoo stores the downloaded sources in /usr/portage/distfiles, you can safely delete this (but need to download every package again) or just delete the older versions from it. btw. mine is 3.0 GB, /usr/portage is 1.1Gb but I also store the binary packages, these are stored in /usr/portage/packages.

remember that also the development libraries are installed, which are needed for compiling other packages. Well with the big harddrives these day, one can abuse a little harddrive space. That's the downside for wanting to build everything yourself.

Thanks, I was looking for this info aswell.

What about /usr/tmp/portage
And /var/tmp/portage

What are they for, is it safe to delete those aswell?

/usr/portage/distfile is pretty obvious, it's where emerge stores the packages, and I delete those frequently. I also delete /usr/tmp/portage, although that doesn't seem to take much space.

Is it safe to delete /var/tmp/portage and /usr/portage (except for /usr/portage/packages) ? I thought the portage tree is stored there when you do emerge rsync.

Greets,

Yes /usr/portage is the destination for the rsync, don't want to remove it, just concentrate on the packages and distfiles subdirs.

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 05-28 20:31 /usr/tmp -> ../var/tmp

so it's a link. /var/tmp/portage/* can be delete without problems, well I haven't encounterd any yet. It's a temporary storage for the builds, uncompleted builds can take up a lot of space.

:!: But don't ever and I say never, touch the dir /var/db/portage. This is where info about the installed packages is stored
