Illissius: are you using reiser4 by any chance? Any lockups under high load (like emerge sync and compiling a new kernel)?

No. I have ext2 for /boot, ext3 for /, ntfs for /win, and vfat for /misc.

would it be possible to have some sort of changelog in the post about (a) the major changes since the last nitro, and (b) the major changes in the kernel revision itself?

I'll try, but I don't have much time lately to read LKML so much :(

Oh. I thought patchset developers read LKML by default or something. If you don't, then don't go through to bother of reading it just to tell me about it ;).

Yay! New nitro! I'll post results later... 8)

Thanks seppe for excellent patchset!

BTW, there should be irc-channel for nitro-sources (just like love-sources have one ;))

Hi,
Just updated my kernel and everything works good except I cant get the realtime-lsm module to work :
Code:
MattsBox linux # modprobe realtime
FATAL: Error inserting realtime (/lib/modules/2.6.9-rc4-nitro1/extra/realtime.ko): Invalid module format
Any ideas?
Also, when I do make modules modules_install I get:
Code:
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.9-rc4-nitro1/kernel/security/commoncap.ko needs unknown symbol vm_hardmaplimit
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.9-rc4-nitro1/kernel/security/commoncap.ko needs unknown symbol vm_mapped

I made an addon patch, see my original post. If anyone knows how to get it working with a Dell Inspiron 8600 + ATI mobile radeon 9600, let me know ;)

seppe,
I actually have it working on my T42p which has a FireGL on it. And oh yeah, I have fbsplash working too. Don't ask me how I got it working. Mostly trail and error. Also, VMware compiles and runs nicely on it (woohoo!). The only thing that still won't compile are the madwifi drivers. Any chance you could patch what's needed for those on the next release?

Unusual behaviour here, tried to boot into this new kernel and it hangs around the section where it is starting hotplug or setting the user font. It does complain that hotplug has already been started, though in other kernels I've never seen this if this gives any ideas.

It locks to the point where I can't do anything except hitting the power button.

Any ideas?

Code:

oktane@thoroughbred ~ $ uname -r && uptime
2.6.9-rc4-nitro1
05:05:13 up  8:02,  5 users,  load average: 0.04, 0.20, 0.18

Working very well here! I cannot help you because I compiled this without hotplug support (I don't need it)

This is great! I'm glad somebody is working on this ..

But how about checking out http://www.hoochzone.com/vdr in the forums section, there is a Gentoo forum with a how-to setting up VDR

Everybody lately has to patch the kernel driver for the DVB card in order to use the Nexus-S / Technotrend DVB satellit cards. These are the best for *nix using it with VDR because it has hardware decoding and puts out everything on the tv screen out of the sat. card including EPG.

You would save so many people so many problems and especially time with a kernel source that had both LIRC and the patched drivers in.

my 2cents... I'd be downloading now for LIRC support if I didnt have to re-configure everything in that tutorial

xconfig seems to be broken:

make[1]: *** [scripts/kconfig/qconf] Error 1
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

Menuconfig works fine though

i think you can fix this by re-emerge-ing qt

Try setting RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP="no" in /etc/conf.d/rc; I had similar lockups on boot with parallel startup and ck/nitro sources.

Would you mind sharing your hibernate.conf file? Thanks ;)

Oh and hotplug works fine here

It's a bug in the mapped_watermark6 patch. A new nitro will be up soon with updated CK patches. See http://bhhdoa.org.au/pipermail/ck/2004-October/001218.html for more info

Still the same as with all nitro since rc1-nitro1; freeze very early when trying to compile something. Strange, since rc4-mm1 even with preemptive works rock solid since some days here.

Should I use pre-emptive kernel or not? I am not using because Con says it's a Bad Thing(tm). What's the advantages of pre-emptive kernel? I have tried to run with it, and without it. but I haven't noticed any difference.

If you haven't noticed any difference then leave it how you want. A lot of people (me included) noticed a huge difference in permace/latency with it not selected, even on 'non-ck' kernels and I haven't had it on since 2.6.0 came out.

It looks like YMMV, you will also find people who notice a degrading of performance with it not selected so they go back to using it (I personally find that doubtful and I think their own predjudice is getting in the way of their judgement but it is possible).

It comes down to performance on your machine.

Yeah, I don't see any difference so I leave it disabled. Thanks.

WinXP in Vmware dies, with IRQ_LESS_OR_EQUAL blue death.
It worked with 2.6.9-rc3-nitro2 (well, at least it booted, and run for hours).
The config is the same.
1GB lowmem patch is disabled. (i have 512M)
Except this it seems to be working fine, compiles, boot, nothing unusual in this first 10-20 minutes of usage:)
Thx.

I myself had problems like this, along with segfaults during emerges on reiser4 - not having any problems with this kernel on xfs 8)
