UML - Gentoo

I have followed the UML gentoo help doc. My UML boots but when i log in it stalls.. (forever) no errors just sits there wating for the password prompt... anyone seen this before?

Can remember a similar problem I had when I first installed gentoo, can't remember what it was, mayde I didn't set the root passwd with passwd, but think it had something to do with the PAM package, yep, but what I can't remember.
