I'm trying to install my Epson C42UX printer.
I am working by the Gentoo printer tutorial but I don't have /var/log/messages or /dev/usb/lp0

Do I have to creat them and if so how?

Thanks

If you don't have /var/log/message you have a big problem.

If you don't have /dev/usb/lp0 check your printer's connections and whether or not the kernel has USB printer support.

I tried reading the gentoo printer tutorial, but I am not a fan of CUPS.

May I suggest you try apsfilter?

emerge apsfilter

it will ask you a bunch of install questions and then print a test page. It works quite well for 90% of what you need a printer for in Linux. Being a name brand printer, you stand a very good chance of have apsfilter work for you.

http://www.apsfilter.org/
Since apsfilter uses ghostscript, you can check the list of printers probably supported at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/. However, the site is down (at least here from the data-mines at work).

I have a C40UX and the printer guide worked well for me. Make sure you have all the various USB modules that you need compiled and loaded. Also if you are running KDE make sure you have cups as a use variable. The USB modules are probably the problem.

I like cups. I haven't really had any problems with it.
