TrueType fonts look bitmapped

Hello,
I just installed gentoo. I left truetype enabled in the USE variable.
After setting up X with exactly the same configuration as my LFS system i was using before, I started X with KDE. But all TrueType fonts look crappy.
See: http://home.t-online.de/home/5200712465 ... pshot1.png
On my LFS system it looks so:

As you see much better.
What could be the problem?

You have 2 choices:

1. Enable antialias in KDE and remove the truetype fonts from your XF86Config file (optional - other programs may not be able to use these fonts) or your font server (only list the TT font directory in XftConfig)

2. Not using antialias - remove the TT font directory from the XftConfig file (you must have at least one font directory listed in this file - use a fake one with one font or something)

Hope it helps.

FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/"

Try using XFS (X Font Server, not the filesystem ;)). That cleaned up my fonts.

How do I use xfs (Load "xtt"? <- This one?). If so, I already tried. Didn't help.

I also tried enabling anti-aliasing. It definitly looks better, but I think it's still crap because it's too smoothed.

I searched around a little and I found a webpage http://mbox.troja.mff.cuni.cz/~peak/ftdemo/index.cgi
I chose the Verdana Font and tried with disabling anti-alias and hinting and got the same results as I have at home.
When I just enabled hinting the Font looked fine. How can I enable it in Gentoo?

Seems as if I'm Talking to myself ;)
I looked in the file: /usr/X11R6/include/freetype2/freetype/config/ftoption.h
and saw that,
#define TT_CONFIG_OPTION_BYTECODE_INTERPRETER
which is for needed to enable hinting, is ok.
But how can the fonts still look so crappy?
The tip with xfs also didn't solve the problem.
Now I'm a little frustrated.
However I wonder how this can happen. On my old LFS system everything was configured just like in my Gentoo installation. The Packages were also the same.
Fortunately, I can switch back to LFS. This wrong shown fonts give me a headache...

Ok, last time. I found the error.
I re-emerged xfree but I disabled the xft patch in the ebuild script. Perhaps an administrator should review the patch. It doesn't improve quality, it makes it worse...

Actually I have been having the exact same problem. I'll try rebuilding xfree with xft disabled and see if it fixes my problem too.
