I installed Gentoo 2004.2 x86 on my laptop. Installed Nvidia Graphics driver. Modified xorg.conf file to include the nvidia drivers.

Everything works. There are a couple of nice to haves

My laptop support 1280X1024 (or something like that) screen resolution. But, with Nvidia driver I get only 1024X768. Though I have modes set to 1280 X 1024.

1) How do I increase the screen resolution?

Second problem is if I don't use the Nvidia drivers, then the screen resolution increases but at the same time the menu bar and task bar disappear - beyond the screen and I cannot see it.

2) How do I fix the screen from stretching beyond the LCD screen.


I have Compaq Presarrio R3000 AMD64.

Any help appreciated.

Look in the following file: /var/log/Xorg.0.log with the driver "nvidia" enabled. The driver will clearly state what modes it uses and why.

allex87 Thanks for the xorg.conf file. I will try it this evening.

My touchpad is not working either - the mouse jumps around.

Thank you very much for sharing your xorg.conf file. I used it to get 1280X860 screen resolution successfully. Couldn't have done it without your help.

I got the touch pad working by doing modprobe psmouse.

There's one problem I cannot get the windows (browser) to scroll vertically/Horizontally. Were you able to figure that out? If so, can you please help me with that.

you can try xrandr , its the resolution changing tool.

something like

may get you the res. you are looking for

Well, I couldn't get the screen resolution higher.

Now, I got my ALPS touch pad recognized, but the scrolling is very painful.
