I contributed to RC5-64 for 4 years. I'll see how this goes. If I don't get some immediate satisfaction, I think I'm out. This is a long and winding road with no forseeable destination me thinks. |

RC5? As in codebreaking? Thanks but no thanks. I'd rather spend my CPU-cycles on something at least remotely useful, like SETI (no, I'm not being sarcastic). |

one question about all these proggies... I haven't *actively* used one yet (I just ran it, then closed it again). They are supposed to use our spare CPU time... is that true? let's say if I start playing quake3, will I have cpu lag? |

In theory, no. They run at the lowest priority so everything else gets first picks at the cpu usage.
One thing to note though, when I have seti@home running, my usb webcam runs MUCH slower than when it's off. I don't see how it should effect it, but it does. I just turn seti off when I'm using the webcam though - not hard to do. |

Code: |
[Dec 30 20:14:27 UTC] 1 cruncher has been started.
[Dec 30 20:14:29 UTC] Connected to us.v29.distributed.net:2064...
[Dec 30 20:14:29 UTC] Net::write: error 111: Connection refused
[Dec 30 20:14:29 UTC] Connection closed.
|
and it doesnt seem to be doing anything at the mo (didnt output anything else up to now)
any ideas? |

Mine was doing that also...the proxy was down or something. I just stopped the client ( dnetc -shutdown in other terminal ) then did a flush ( dnetc -flush ) and all packets were successfully sent. |

I've been doing dnet for at least 3 years now... over a year on my current (new) team. Dnet was the original--way before SETI... besides, if you really think about it, SETI is so bogus... what are the chances that ET is using the (relatively) super narrow band that SETI@home is checking, and that the simple algorithms SETI@home is using wil lactually match a a pattern? Gimme a break.
99% of the people who run SETI@home just do it for the screensaver. ;o)
And to the guy who said that SETI is at least useful, he should check out dnet's page and look at the OGR stuff. OGR has preference over RC5 anyway, and it's very useful... Dnet is already proving things with OGR that have never been proven by hand... quite cool.
If you're interested in joining my work (not a team, but I have a bunch of friends and sytsems running as an individual), set your ID (e-mail addy) to dnet@jacobmcdonald.net.
Moo!!

Try to emerge bind-tools, the client tries to find an ip with host. If that doesn't work try again or select another proxy from the http://distruted.net site..
(I'm busy with OGR, and our team has not very much cpu power.. Can't switch, sory ) _________________ Woei. |

yottabit,
I'll take a pass on using your email address to submit my units.
Though I'm sure you'll do the right thing and distribute the prize money equally between everyone using your email address if you/they find the correct key. Hahaha. |

yeah yeah, not going to be able to distribute the prize money! haha!
But I'm really concentrating on OGR instead of RC5, and there is no prize for OGR anyhow...
So join my team if:
1. you don't care about the prize, or
2. you just want to participate in OGR

I used to run these distributed computing things, i ran seti the most and used to make sure i was crunching a unit whenever i wasnt using my computer.. then i realised.. the only reason i was doing it was because of all the rants around the forums about howmany units they had crunched. People where not seeing it as a search for aliens but just using a number as cred. I had been sucked in by this, and when i realised it i was disapointed in myself.
I think RC5-64 sums it up realy, How many of you who participated in this are now thinking.. "Oh, some dude in Tokyo won.. what was the point in me taking part? All that effort just so someone can say "Yay we have cracked RC5-64" hummph"
All distributed computing projects have credible aims, but i wonder how many people realy see those aims anymore.. For a lot of them its "Look i've worked through 3,428 data units, arnt i good!"
</rant>
Thankyou for reading. |

To all those who posted of net write errors, Roel is correct. The dnetc client relies on the host utility being present to resolve the keyserver. I'm a bit surprised you haven't ran into other problems as well, as many applications rely on host as well. |

That would be me. OGR? Is that the protein-folding? Cancer-research? Sorry, but no thanks. In my book SETI is more important. But I can easily understand why some choose protein-folding instead of SETI. Codebreaking I do not understand. |

The Net::write errors have nothing to do with the host utility as the client has already resolved the hostname and connected:
Code: | [Dec 30 20:14:29 UTC] Connected to us.v29.distributed.net:2064... |
As I mentioned previously, for some reason the dnet proxy is refusing the upload. I had the same problem until I did a 'dnetc -flush'. The packets in the out buffer were successfully uploaded and I haven't had the problem since. |
