The gaim changelog at gaim.sourceforge.net says that it can compile with gtk 2.0. When I "emerge -p gaim", it says that gtk 1.2 is a dependency. How can I get it to use gtk 2.0?

File a bug, assign to me and I'll get to it when I've fixed the other gnome2 issues.
