Hi, when I install SILO on a Sun Fire V210 (tried 1.4.8 from emerge)
I can't boot images from the harddisk.

It gets to the part about remapping kernel then hangs; never get to the

"Booting Linux..." line.

However, if I boot the Gentoo 2004.2 CD with SILO 1.4.4 I can boot
kernels and run from the harddisk!
I.e.
boot disk
SILO 1.4.8
boot: /boot/kernel-2.4.26-sparc-r2 root=/dev/sda1

doesnt' work. But

boot cdrom
SILO 1.4.4
boot: disk;1/boot/kernel-2.4.26-sparc-r2 root=/dev/sda1

works!

I've tried 1.4.0, 1.4.4, 1.4.8 on the harddisk. All fail after Remapping kernel

Any ideas why this thing works from CD-ROM but not after being
installed on harddisk. I'm wondering whether I have a funky disklabel
as it's left over from Solaris 9; it's a 73GB disklabel
(24x424x14087 - I know it looks weird) but Linux runs fine
after booting.

(I have done silo -f etc; all files in /boot look ok - kernel and ramdisk
are fine since the CDROM SILO is happy to boot them off the disk; just
can't get the whole thing to run off disk.)

Bizarro - SILO 1.3.2 works from harddisk and I can
boot 2.4.2x and 2.6.9rc2 kernels with initrd.

I haven't tried initramfs on the 2.6.9 stuff yet.

You need to run silo again.

Typically people have one of these problems with it:

- bad silo.conf configuration (you didn't show us yours)
- /boot wasn't mounted when silo was run
- wasn't run with silo.conf in /boot with this command:
Code:
silo -C /boot/silo.conf

Add a -f to above to force the boot record to be written.
