Ok, I'm confused. I followed the ALSA guide and got sound working on my B&W G3. Well, mostly working.

aplay works just fine and even the media keys (volume up/down, mute) work (from within Gnome), but playing sounds, such as from the Sound configuration tool or inside the default Gnome games, in Gnome does not work.

This is a 2.6.4 kernel with all the sound components compiled as modules. Permissions look right (and as I said, aplay works), so what am I missing?

Do you have gnome-audio installed?

Yeah, I emerged gnome-audio -- aplay plays the various sound files installed by gnome-audio.

And the gnome tools that let you change/monitor the volume seem to work (they register what amixer registers), but no actual sound comes from the gnome applications.

Ok, I'm having the exact same problem, alsa works fine, but not esd. I have tried everything I can think of and no luck.

I have a G4 Cube with usb speakers that came with the system. I am using kernel 2.6.7r14 and gnome 2.6.

Did you include alsa in your USE flags? ESD works fine here (with the said flag included), so I thought I would mention it.

Same problem here with my G4/400 Sawtooth. Alsa works, esd works, sound in xmms, sound in gaim (using esd), sound with aplay, sound with esdplay, but no sound in gnome (even if activated).

Andy

I also emerged esound with the ALSA flag, and still no luck. Whenever I try to get esd working I get the following errors:

Audio device open for 44.1Khz, mono, 8bit failed
Trying 22.05Khz, 8bit mono.
Audio device open for 22.05Khz, mono, 8bit failed
Trying 11.025Khz, 8bit stereo.

Trying 8.192Khz, 8bit mono.
Audio device open for 8.192Khz, mono, 8bit failed

I hope someone knows what I'm doing wrong, this is very frustrating.

Ok, I got a step closer. I finally got esdplay to work by adding the esd USE flag and emerging the
~ppc build of esound. Still no sound in gnome though. I really wonder what I'm missing here.

Ok, a tad bit closer but still not there. At this point I have esdplay working, aplay working, and nautilus sounds(when you hover over a sound file) playing. Still no luck with playing sounds with Sound Preferences window, and no System Bell.

I have found that there was a known bug in libgnome 2.6.1, so I upgraded to 2.6.1.2 which supposedly fixed the bug, but still no luck.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what next I should try?

I have the same problem. All of the Gnome sounds are broken. But sounds in XMMS and Gaim work fine. Anyone know why??

Also Rhythmbox doesn't want to play any internet radio listings. Anyone having this problem?

I've still got the problem, but with the newest kernel (2.6.9) the console beep works on my ibook 700. I don't know why after rebooting with the new kernel it was suddenly there but still no gnome sounds.
