just got a second cpu module for my e250 and...nothing...cannot boot...

i've tested both cpus in a single-cpu combination and both work fine...
i've recompiled kernel and nothing...

also tried booting solaris from old hdd and guess what? both cpus are visible...
(yes, cpus are the same part number - otherwise solaris also wouldn't work)

kernel is 2.6.7 + grsecurity 2.0.1...smp is enabled (4)

with both cpus active i cannot seem to get further than

Quote:
allocating 8mb ....
booting kernel

and thats it...nothing after that...

any ideas?

I am having the same problem with my Ultra 80 on a fresh install. I am checking my kernel config to make sure I didn't miss anything. I will post again if I find anything.

if you find a solution, please let me know...

i've tried playing with kernel confiig, but didn't get far...
my next step was to be to use ciaran's config for 2.6.5 and to work my way up from that...

but if u find something sooner - great....

Are you both using grsecurity? If you try a kernel without grsecurity, how does it work? I can boot a 2.6.7 SMP kernel on my Ultra 2 but it has stability issues under heavy disk I/O and/or CPU usage.

I am not using grsecurity. I ended up grabbing the config file for the ultra 80 posted on Ciaran McCreesh's site. http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/configs/kernel/2.6.x/ and used that as a base. I can boot now and other than a few minor problems having to do with my fat fingers. I seem to be working just fine.
Hope this helps.

The kernel seems pretty stable today. I am emerging xorg right now and the system is still functioning. If it matters here are my stats
Quad 450
2 GB RAM
9 GB
Elite 3d
this is my unstable box so if you want me try anything to it let me know.

thats good news...

i just compiled my kernel from scratch using same starting point, but its a bit to l8t to play with a screwdriver to install a second cpu - so i'll leave it for 2morrow...

btw, i did a quick compare of my .config and newly generated one - wow - its a huge difference (diff=451 lines)

damn....no luck...

my kernel is based on ciaran's ultra80 smp kernel config for 2.6.5

made oldconfig + some small changes (enabled reiserfs and lvm otherwise i would have no access to root, disabled framebuffer and dri since i have raptor gfx with permedia 2v chipset and thats about it)

this is what i get:

    allocated 8mb ...
    mapping ...
    booting (with proper version identifer)

but it never goes any further...
next thing should be to clear screen and

    mapping hash-table...

but with second cpu in place i never get that far....

any ideas?

going back to kernel 2.4 is not really an option since my system is taking advantage of clean udev system and couple of other options not present in 2.4, so going back would probably result in total mess...

Try adding a -p to the end of your image name when you type it into the silo prompt.

For example, if the boot image you setup in silo.conf was named Gentoo;

Code:
boot: Gentoo -p

Does that give you any extra output, and if so what?
