I'm sure this question will generate a lot of heat, so please remember to keep the discussion factual and objective. So here we go:

The Gentoo forums are getting bigger and bigger, and it becomes quite time-consuming to sort the really interesting posts from the "background noise". Personally, I think comment moderation systems such as Slashdot's are very successful in eliminating that background noise. Should Gentoo Forums implement something similar?

Before you start dismissing this idea in the name of Free Speech, please realize that comment moderation is not the same as censoring. Every user is free to browse at the lowest rating threshold, where every post will be visible. People fed up with reading silly comments can set their threshold to a higher value. It's about choice.

Another advantage would be that the concept of "ranks" (n00b, apprentice, etc.) would become more meaningful. The current system, where your rank only depends on the number of posts submitted, can too easily be abused. People can boost their rank by simply posting a lot of stuff with little thought. Moderators might be able to catch the worst offenders, but where do you draw the line?

Please share your thoughts on this issue!

It would be great to be able to tag posts in a way that would allow you to jump to 'important' posts within a thread... it's not so fun reading through 70 pages of posts to find what you need about your Radeon. Not to mention the searching isn't so good...

Moved from GC.

Our official line for this kind of modifications is to first verify if it is already implemented in phpBB and after that we can analyze it. If it isn't implemented in mainstream phpBB, we are not going to use it here because of the difficulties in upgrading it later.
