Umm...use an ebuild :) If a 3.12.0 ebuild isn't in portage yet, then you can probably get away with doing this (enable your portage overlay in /etc/make.conf if you haven't already):
Code:
mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/files
cp /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.11.1.ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.12.0.ebuild
cp /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/files/* /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/files
cp fglrx-4.3.0-3.12.0.i386.rpm /usr/portage/distfiles
ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.12.0.ebuild digest
emerge ati-drivers

The portage overlay directory (/usr/local/portage by default) is a place you can put your own custom ebuilds so that they don't get deleted when you run "emerge sync".

Code:
mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/files

This creates the directories in the portage overlay that are needed for a new ati-drivers ebuild.
Code:
cp /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.11.1.ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.12.0.ebuild

This makes a copy of the official 3.11.1 ebuild in your overlay and renames it so that it will install the 3.12.0 driver instead (this will work with lots of packages, not just ati-drivers).
Code:
cp /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/files/* /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/files

This copies the patches that the ebuild might need to the correct directory in the overlay.
Code:
cp fglrx-4.3.0-3.12.0.i386.rpm /usr/portage/distfiles

This just puts the rpm where portage will find it, so you don't need to download it again.
Code:
ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.12.0.ebuild digest

This creates a digest for the ebuild (md5sums etc).
Code:
emerge ati-drivers

And this emerges the new 3.12.0 ebuild (assuming you're running ~x86 anyway :))

Edit: when a 3.12.0 ebuild does appear in portage, you should unmerge the drivers, run "rm -rf /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers", then emerge the drivers again, so that it uses the official ebuild.

Could someone tell me why is software rendering faster than hardware rendering on my machine? I mean when I use ePSXe's Open SoftX as the video plugin, the fps is much better. But when I use the MesaGL video plugin, it because terribly slow when there are transparency and overlay. But if there are no transparency and overlay, it would be faster than SoftX. So I concluded that there are problem with my direct rendering. Is there something wrong with my driver? Please refer to my previous post for my glxinfo.

I'm having some problems :)

I've been following this guide, but still can't get 3D support working.

I've got a Radeon 9800 Pro. agpgart is compiled into the kernel. Here's my xorg.conf, which is fresh out of fglrxconfig.

I'm using ati-drivers version 3.12.0, Xorg version 6.7.0-r2.

Here's the output of glxinfo:

Code:

rob@rob rob $ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

bash-2.05b# emerge ati-drivers
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) media-video/ati-drivers-3.12.0 to /
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) fglrx-4.3.0-3.12.0.i386.rpm
* you are using a xorg-x11 version too new !!!
* You must downgrade to xorg-x11-6.7.0 otherwise
* trying to use opengl will crash X

!!! ERROR: media-video/ati-drivers-3.12.0 failed.
!!! Function pkg_setup, Line 44, Exitcode 0
!!! Better safe than sorry.

lol lol lol 8O

Anyone knows when new ati drivers with xorg 6.8 support will became avaible

Mythos: I'm hoping the next driver version will have the necessary support, but I wouldn't bet on that.

robmiller: Can you post your log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log), and check the output of the "dmesg" command for any errors (particularly any prefixed by "agpgart" or "fglrx

SnEptUne: I've no idea what's going on with your framerates. I've never used the radeon driver myself, so I don't have much else to suggest. Are there any errors in your logs or dmesg that may be relevant? Have you tried different versions of the DRM code?

I finnally got my radeon 9200 to work under linux, however everytime I run glxgears there seems to be a sorta "choppyness" going on on the right side of the screen. It is like a few dark lines going crazy on the right side, very weird. However, if I reduce the glxgears to the smallest window possible, I see no problem. Any ideas?

Hi. I have an X800 but I can't modprobe the module
Code:
enterprise root # modprobe fglrx
/lib/modules/2.4.26-gentoo-r9/video/fglrx.o: /lib/modules/2.4.26-gentoo-r9/video/fglrx.o: unresolved symbol _mmx_memcpy
/lib/modules/2.4.26-gentoo-r9/video/fglrx.o:
Hint: You are trying to load a module without a GPL compatible license
and it has unresolved symbols.  Contact the module supplier for
assistance, only they can help you.

/lib/modules/2.4.26-gentoo-r9/video/fglrx.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.26-gentoo-r9/video/fglrx.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.26-gentoo-r9/video/fglrx.o: insmod fglrx failed

I have the following symlink in /usr/src/:
Code:
enterprise root # ls -l /usr/src/linux
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 23 Sep  6 14:35 /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.4.26-gentoo-r9/

Needless to say what I'm looking for is 3D. :)

BTW: I've tried googling for the 'unresolved symbol'-part but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for ... not in any language I can understand, anyway.

edit: added the BTW.

You don't need to modprobe that is a internal conf of ati in xorg.conf

you only need to call fglrx driver in you xorg.con or XF86config

PostPosted: Thu Sep 16, 2004 5:08 am    Post subject: bigdesktop and opengl... funny thing Reply with quote

I will admit I have not read through all 75 pages, i did not see anything that helped so far even though i tried alot of suggestions, but I have read most of the postings, but here is my problem if anyone can help...

I have recently done a fresh install of gentoo, I have X up and running, in single head mode everything works flawless (i do get better performance out of the 3.11 drivers so that is what i stuck with), when i configure my display to do bigdesktop and run any opengl app (glxgears, tuxracer, quake3.... i get no display what so ever unless i run it windows and drag the window to the full width and then I will see the right side of the app all the way to left of window, almost like it doesn't know how to draw or resize to the window currently there.

other things i tried for the giggles of it, clone mode i get opengl with no problems, dual head mode it works flawless with a small loss of performance. So I know opengl is running and not too shabby. I would stay using the dual head mode other than i cant drag one window between the 2 desktops (which makes little fun when doing development).

I am open to any suggestions and will provide any information that anyone wants to know, and yes I have a copy of all my working configs for each mode.

It is:
Code:

Still I get this in Xorg.0.log:
Code:
drmOpenDevice: minor is 0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)

drmOpenDevice: Open failed

(EE) fglrx(0): DRIScreenInit failed!
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed!                  *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *

(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available                *

Now I was lead to believe, that drm had to be disabled in the kernel, isn't that so?

Another thing: A different thread here (can't find it right now :() mentioned, that perhaps I need to apply a patch, since I'm running with an AMD-cpu. The thread actually talked about the patch fixing some memory problem. Can anyone elaborate?[/code]

It probably refers to the following issue (from Wedge's Radeon FAQ)

Quote:
I have an Epox 8RDA motherboard and can't get direct rendering to work using a 2.6 kernel
This problem appears to result from the removal of a function from the kernel source file drivers/char/agp/nvidia-agp.c. I'm not a kernel coder, so I can't tell you what the function does or why it was removed, but adding the missing function back into the file appears to get things working again without any nasty side-effects. A small patch which applies the changes can be downloaded from here. To patch your current kernel sources, perform the following commands:

cd /usr/src/linux
patch -p1 < /path/to/nvidia-agp.diff

Once the patch is applied, recompile your kernel as normal, copy the new bzImage to your boot partition, and reboot.
UPDATE: this patch is longer necessary for more recent 2.6 kernels, the missing code has been added back in. You should be able to check if your kernel has it by doing grep nvidia_init_iorr /usr/src/linux/drivers/char/agp/nvidia-agp.c. If that returns a few lines of code, you shouldn't need to apply the patch.

Just follow the instructions on the bottom and you'll be sure if you need to patch or not.

The Gentoo ebuilds will generally apply all the patches that are required, so if it's not the patch Ouphe mentioned then you don't need to do anything yourself.

criis wrote:

Yes, that's right. The fglrx driver provides the DRM support itself, so if you enable the kernel DRM it tends to conflict.

About your problem - I would seriously consider upgrading to a 2.6 kernel. If you can't or don't want to, try another 2.4 kernel version, or try cleaning up your kernel source dir and trying again. There are some instructions for doing that in my FAQ somewhere (link in sig).

It's not that I'm unwilling to upgrade, but I had a thousand million problems getting it to work (I think it was SATA-related but I'm not sure). I'll give it a shot again, I think, and get back here if I ever get my machine up and running again. :)

After I got a 2.6-kernel up and running the module installed flawlessly so now I have 3D. Actually I had feared that the 3D would be much worse on my Radeon, but I get around 90 FPS in ut2004-demo and maybe 50 when theres a lot of action. Not really what the card should be able to do but better than I expected.

Never mind: this reply is just to say thank you to all you guys in here who've helped me; especially you Wedge_ with all you competent replies in this long thread and you lovely guide.

Good to hear it's working, but yes, you generally won't get near the performance of the Windows drivers. I'd imagine things will improve over time - the only question is: how much time? :)

I'm not picky about the "_" :P

Hi all. I'm at wit's end with this ati-drivers problem and could use some help. I get a signal 11 without much other instructive information from xorg-x11 (this is just the end of my Xorg.0.log file):

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
    at http://wiki.X.Org
 for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

I'm using kernel 2.6.8-gentoo-r3 (configured appropriately as per the Gentoo ATI Radeon FAQ), xorg-x11-6.7.0-r1, ati-drivers-3.12.0 (although I've tried older versions as well), on an IBM T42 laptop with a Pentium M processor.

Here are my CFLAGS: "-O2 -march=pentium3 -fprefetch-loop-arrays -funroll-loops -pipe". I would say these are not very aggressive.

From the log it looks like everything is working, direct rendering is enabled, and then it crashes.

I've tried a lot to fix it, including toggling the internal AGP of the fglrx driver, etc.

The only way I can get the X server to work is to either uncomment "dri" or "glx" from my X config file. Of course then 3D doesn't work, but at least I can use my computer.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? It's really driving me nuts.

how hard can that be?

Wow, great thing for someone who's just trying Gentoo to see the first time they look for ATI info in the forums.

Well, it was posted 16 months ago, and I think most people will tend to jump to the end of the thread anyway. It's not much fun trying to read through all 75 pages of it, and the forum search function isn't much use either.

@giannifive: it's always difficult to troubleshoot this kind of problem, since there's no obvious error. Try setting "UseFastTLS" to "2" in your xorg.conf, and try swapping your kernel AGP configuration (ie if it's currently compiled as modules, try it builtin).

I've finally got fglrx working on my system, but it refuses to run with 'glx' turned on. The screen flashes 4 times, until I get to the textmode x.org failure screen.

The output of Xorg.0.log mentions no error until the very end.

Here's the full log, with glx turned on:

I'm using a Radeon M9 with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8_r3. Everything else seems working fine with X. I know my video card support 3D in Windows, so it's got to be a configuration problem on my part. :(.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there are you loading in Kernel character devices your main boarder chipset ?

in my case i have to use via-agp.

If you are Ati user you can forget Ati-drivers for Radeon bus, intall Xorg-x11 6.7.0-r1 or r2.

Version 6.7.99 and 6.8 seems be incompatible with ati drivers.

jfbilodeau: it looks like you have the same problem as giannifive. As I said above:

it's always difficult to troubleshoot this kind of problem, since there's no obvious error. Try setting "UseFastTLS" to "2" in your xorg.conf, and try swapping your kernel AGP configuration (ie if it's currently compiled as modules, try it builtin).
