All.

I just saw this interesting article about Intel overclocking Pentium4 to 8Ghz.
That would be sweet!

How long would it take to emerge KDE on such a baby?
Oh, and the standard /. remark: Imagine a BeoWulf cluster of these...

Well, that's nothing... What I want to see is the memory bus that feeds that monster!

Well, currently, the highest overclock is right around 4.2Ghz if I remember correctly. This is using liquid nitrogen, in a temporary setup. http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=145869

ACtually, looks like that was beat with - 4588Ghz http://holicho.lib.net/top/021208/021208.htm if it's accurate...

I doubt these systems are stable under typical daily use though.

While on one hand it's great to say you've got your system overclocked to 4.something GHz, OTOH it doesn't count unless you can do what you would normally do without stuff crashing and freezing on you.

IMO, it takes more than just getting your system to POST and boot the kernel...

Color me skeptical. :?

Well try www.tomshardware.com. They overclocked P4 to a ~ 4.1 GHz and then ran the typical tests for the system, quake, sisoft sandra, comanche...

Stability is subjective but at least in this case it wasn't some quick few minutes test but included a range of test programs. And the article specifically claims that this system is stable. I can't comment on that but I must say they had quite nice cooling system too. A real professional setup instead of some temporary liquid nitrogen system.

Or the more controversial /. remark:
IN SOVIET RUSSIA Intel's Pentium4 overclocks <b>you</b> to 8Ghz

Well, right, space is cold -- but there's little to vent heat away with. Things in space would stay warm for quite some time without some active cooling mechanism, which is actually what a lot of space suits are supposed to do: keep people from overheating. So, you'd be better off on Antarctica, where you have a cold atmosphere to take your heat away.

:D

True, those overclocks were only in during temporary testing conditions, but it's nice to see the overclocking overhead these chips can have.

I'd only go for watercooling with a TEC(Peltier), perhaps a Phase Change if I actually knew what I was doing. I also only run stable systems, but it's fun to see how high you can go once in a while.
