Someone tell me, that I'm hallucinating...

I recompile the kernel to get the soundcore module. I run the usual make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install. I then copy the i386 bzImage to my other Gentoo partition where GRUB loads it on boot. Everything just works fine.

I then reboot, but ALSA does not get initialised on boot because I have to recompile the drivers for it. I do that, then run update-modules as it says in the ALSA guide. (The /etc/modules.d/alsa file is correct, the same thing works on my other Gentoo partition)

I then proceed to run /etc/init.d/alsasound restart. It doesnt do shit. A quick lsmod shows that only ppp/netfilter modules are there. So I try to modprobe soundcore - it cant find it!

/etc/init.d/alsasound restart has DELETED all my kernel modules. I cd to /usr/src/linux, run make modules_install and I can modprobe soundcore again. But I get a shitload of errors about unresolved symbols. So I re-emerge alsa-driver again and run /etc/init.d/alsasound restart again and the same thing happens all over AGAIN...

Even if I rc-update add alsasound boot and reboot, it wont init my SBLive! for some odd reason. Just shells out with some unresolved symbols on snd-emu10k1. (I can modprobe the module though right after I re-emerge alsa-driver)

Plus it seems that update-modules actually writes "/etc/modules.conf." and not "/etc/modules.conf" as it should. Or am I missing something here?

I'm trying to build a specialised ROX-Filer centered Gentoo install. I'm imitating my other Gentoo install as closely as I can and that one works just fine. Well, almost fine since XFT/Fontconfig fscked up my damn GTK2. Still trying to get that working again.

Anyone had similar problems? As a side note, the closest I've gotten to working ALSA was alsactl saying that it cant find any soundcards.
