I know that xinetd is not installed/enabled by default, but what about inetd, is it a requirement for any system critical programs. Is inetd installed by default with a new gentoo installation?
Thanks,

inetd is included with the netkit-base ebuild, which I believe is included by the installation of Gentoo.

Although it is included, it is not included in the default runlevel by default, is not running by default, and is not necessary for any critical components of Gentoo. I have never enabled inetd since I switched to Gentoo. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I was curious because I just installed and started using leafnode nntp server and it requires inetd or xinetd. I installed xinetd but was speaking with the developer and asked him if they had any plans to do a standalone version and he seemed confused to hear that I was running a version of *nix and was not using (x)inetd. I was kind of force to install xinetd in order to get it to work. I wasn't happy about it though as I haven't had any use for it (that I am aware of) up until now.
