Still no luck here.

I think my new Radeon Mobility 9800 chip just isn't supported yet.

When I run fglrxconfig, it lists the supported cards and mine isn't there.

Everything in /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks good. It even says
Direct rendering enabled.

fglrx also appears to identify the chipset as
ATI R420 JN (Chipset = 0x4a4e)

But as soon as X starts, it is just solid black. No error, just black. I can still kill it with ctrl-alt-backspace.

I posted a question to ATI, but I haven't heard anything.

Does anyone know how I can find out which WindowManager startx is launching? Is it in /etc/X11/xinit?

Thanks for any advice....

I think it's in the /etc/rc.conf under xsession, you must specify a valid xsession but I can't recall where they are storred.

I`ve upgraded to this Kernelversion 2.6.8-r3, Xorg starts now even with DRI enabled, but im getting graphical errors when i move anything. If i start glxgears, the whole machine hangs totaly. I can only reset it :( Is this maybe a problem with framebuffers ?

I´ve taken a shot with my digicam because xorg hangs up shortly after starting it now, but take a look at this photo:

It shows an error and the fucked up graphics.

Any ideas ? I have mtrr compiled into the kernel.

I'm having trouble with the frame buffer but it dosn't affect my XOrg. Did you try the FAQ liked to by Wedge_'s sig:

http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html

That is basically how I solved my problem. What hardware are you using?

I have search the forums and googles for weeks. Nevertheless, I am unable to get my Radeon VE/7000 to work well on Gentoo. The glxgears scores are only ~500 fps on 16-bit desktop with 800x600 resolution. I also have the AGP driver compiled into my system (my chipset is SiS 6xx), DRM support and Radeon are both compiled into my kernel. I have executed opengl-update xorg-x1l, but it doesn't yield any differences. My ATI card works very well in Windows though, so it isn't hardware problem. The 500 fps may not be too bad, but when I ran game that involve transparency and overlay, I only get around 4 fps per second (way too slow). Here's the glxinfo.

I have tried to use xorg-drm-cvs, but it doesn't support my model. ATI-driver wouldn't work for R100 cards either. So I have to stick with kernel's driver or xorg's driver. I suspect that direct rendering is not full enabled. There are a lot of row with slow on the output of glxinfo. Does anyone have any idea what could be done about it to fully enable direct rendering? (given my assumption is correct)

ATI`s support is SHIT, so why not mailing the developers directly?
Look at this:

ATI`s support? Unfortunately, it seems I wouldn't have any support from ATI. (Please note that my card is Radeon VE/7000, ATI's driver doesn't work for me.) Kernel's drm driver is the only solution so far, which is what I am using. Do you know of an ATI driver that I could use? Anyway, does x11-drm works for me?

That only applies to people using the ATI binary driver though. SnEptUne is using the "radeon" DRM driver which ATI aren't involved in developing directly.

SnEptUne: have a look at the options in "man radeon", and try adding some of them to your config file. Enabling page flipping at least should usually give you a speed increase, and there may be other options that I can't remember.

Edit: the x11-drm package should support your card, (I think you need to emerge it by doing VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" emerge x11-drm), but if you're using a 2.6 kernel I think it's still recommended to use the in-kernel DRM instead.

I am using kernel 2.6. I have tried both x11-drm and the kernel 2.6 drm, and I have enabled AGPFastWrit, DDCMode, EnablePageFlip, and WriteBehind, but it yields the same result. x11-drm seems a bit faster on the glxgear benchmark, but there is a major flickering problem on certain OpenGL scenes.

I tried software emulation, and it is way faster than utilitizing Mesa OpenGL; I could get 30fps with software emulation and only 4fps with hardware rendering. What is going on?

Sorry if this has come up before, but when a thread runs to 70+ pages, it's rather hard to search.

Anyway, I have had my ATI Radeon 9600 (R350 I think) card working fine under 2.6.8-r1. I've now upgraded to 2.6.8-r3 and 3D acceleration is broken. I've followed the instructions at http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html and I've got X(free86) working fine, but still no 3D acceleration. The relevant section of /var/log/XFree86.0.log is:

Code:

(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module glx
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)

and the output from glxinfo is:

Code:

Does anyone know a solution to this? I can provide more info if needed - just ask. Also, it would be useful if someone in the know about ati cards could condense the information in this thread into a troubleshooting guide, which people can check more easily before posting problems.

Thanks!

Did you remerge the drivers after updating? And did you run "opengl-update ati" afterwards? One of the things opengl-update does is make a symlink from the libglx.a in your OpenGL implementation to it's normal location in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions. If you cd to that dir and run ls -l, you should see that libglx.a is symlinked to /usr/lib/opengl/ati/extensions/libglx.a. This is the file that X appears to be having trouble loading, so check it out.

I noticed that 3D didn't work under the new kernel, so tried unmerging ati-drivers and then re-merging it. When that failed, I tried re-merging xfree (shotgun debugging, I know...)

After that, I tried a more systematic approach and followed the advice in the faq. I did the following:

- Checked the kernel options, compiled the kernel and installed modules
- restarted the computer with the recompiled kernel
- checked /usr/src/linux pointed to /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-gentoo-r3 (it did)
- emerged ati-drivers
- ran fglrxconfig (accepted all default options apart from mouse and keyboard settings, monitor refresh rates and resolutions)
- ran opengl-update ati
- checked that the fglrx module was loaded using lsmod (it was)
- started XFree

I checked for that symlink in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions and it doesn't exist. The directory /usr/lib/opengl/ati/extensions is a symlink to "..//extensions" (yes, two / characters). There is no directory /usr/lib/opengl/extensions. There is an extensions directory under /usr/lib/opengl/xfree which contains libglx.a (the only copy on the system as reported by "locate libglx.a").

Any ideas?

That doesn't sound right - the directory should be a symlink, but it should point to /usr/lib/opengl/xfree (or xorg)/extensions, so that the libglx.a in there is used. Does the ati-drivers ebuild display any errors or warnings while it's emerging? (I think it should create the symlink) You could also try manually fixing it:
Code:
rm -f /usr/lib/opengl/ati/extensions
ln -s /usr/lib/opengl/xfree/extensions /usr/lib/opengl/ati/extensions
and see if that helps.

OK, I've put in all the symlinks as suggested and it works!

I tried re-merging ati-drivers just to see if it gave any errors and it all worked without error. strange, but at least it's fixed now. thanks for your help!

And what is a developer going to do? This is a business problem that ATI needs to resolve.

Leave the developer alone..

Hi:

I have 2 issues with my Radeon 9800 pro, maybe one of you can help me =):

1) When I switch from KDE (F7) to any Framebuffer Text console (eg F1) and then back to KDE
my screen looks like all pixels have been scrambled in a way. I can detect major colors on the screen but not able to read a text or watch a grafic as normal. This goes away as soon as i move the mouse over it or click the area spotted by "scrambled pixels". But this is quite annoying. Is there a way to fix this ?

2) I think my opengl performance is veryvery poor: glxgears has ~3300fps, and remember - it's a radeon 9800 pro. - and a practical one: Warcraft 3 runs in the highest resolution supported (1600x1200x32 for me) + full details only at ~15-20fps. Under Windows it hits usually my monitor refresh-rate which is 75hz . (currently xorg/x11 is not configured for this high resolution, but i tried already)

Is there anything i could try to get better performance ?
compared to this: http://www.debianforum.de/wiki/?page=Grafik+Benchmark (it's german, but just look at the numbers) or other users in this forum here i think that i should get +4000 at least.

My configuration:
xorg-x11 3.7.0-r1 (in gentoo stable)
ati-drivers with fglrx module loaded(in gentoo testing (~x86))
agpgart + i865 chipset compiled into the kernel (for agp)
Please find my latest Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf here: http://radiator.dyndns.org/staff

drm is disabled.

This is possibly a framebuffer problem, especially if you're using the "radeonfb" driver. Try disabling it and see if it goes away.

glxgears isn't a great benchmark (it was never meant to be one), and that score isn't too bad at all. I don't play Warcraft 3 though, so I can't tell you how that normally performs. The performance of the Linux drivers isn't up to the Windows drivers yet, so don't expect to see the same framerates. Have you tried other driver versions? 3.2.8 is still the fastest of the 3.x.x series for me (9800 Pro here as well), so you may have better luck with that. You can emerge an older version like this:
Code:
emerge =ati-drivers-3.2.8-r2

You can keep your xorg.conf (it should ignore any options it doesn't know about), but you'll need to kill X, unload the old fglrx module ("rmmod fglrx"), load the new fglrx module, then restart X to use the new driver.

Your config and log look fine to me, except that you said "agpgart + i865 chipset compiled into the kernel (for agp)", but you have "UseInternalAGPGART" set to "yes" (ie it will use the AGP support in the fglrx driver rather than the kernel). If you have AGP compiled into the kernel and set "UseInternalAGPGART" to "yes", it usually prevents AGP from working at all, so you might want to check your setup.

Thank you Wedge_.

regarding to 1) Im not using radeon fb, here is an extract from my kernel-config:

# CONFIG_FB_RADEON_OLD is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON is not set

But im using vesa framebuffer.
regarding to 2) kernel-config for that part is here:

Code:

CONFIG_AGP=y
# CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_ATI is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD64 is not set
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL_MCH=y
# CONFIG_AGP_NVIDIA is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_SWORKS is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_EFFICEON is not set

(I don't know which is right here - INTEL or INTEL_MCH (asus p4p800)? So both are enabled. Maybe this can cause problems because they have conflicts so kernel agp is actually not working/disabled, so "UseInternalAGPGART" yes working makes actually sense. But just speculating. Maybe right kernel agp can increase performance?)
Or is that per definition that agp does not work at all when both - internalagp+kernel agp enabled?

But anyway, it seems to work in general - i will try with the old version that you have mentioned.

For benchmarking: Is there any good benchmark ? Maybe even one that is available for windows too, so i can compare windows <-> linux. Im just trying to get away from windows - the only game i play is warcraft3.

The best option just now is probably to run a timedemo in Q3A or UT2K4. If you don't have them just use the demo versions. You can easily run them in Windows and Linux, and compare the scores, or run a timedemo a few times under Linux with different driver versions and see which is best for you.

I'm not sure which one you'd need (or if you need both) - does AGP still work if you set "UseInternalAGPGART" to "no"? Also check what "dmesg | grep agpgart" gives, it should display any AGP errors.

Thank you for the hint with the old driver. although glxgears isnt a very good benchmark - it's the only thing i can compare with atm:

New driver (3.11.1): ~3300fps
Old driver (3.2.8 ): ~4650fps

That's a nice boost.

Any idea to the display problem? it's still there...
I actually do not want to disable framebuffer completely ...

To the useinternalagp - it does not make any difference for me. I get the same results for yes/no.

My fglrx.ko module is no longer loadable via modprobe fglrx, so it is not loaded automatically. But "insmod /lib/modules/2.6.8-gentoo-r3/video/fglrx.ko" works.

When i try modprobe fglrx it refers to an old module (actually the newer driver) which i have renamed. How can i fix this, so modprobe fglrx can find the correct module and loads it automatically on bootup?

What do you mean by renaming it? When you unmerged the old driver version, it should have removed the driver module as well, so you should only have one fglrx module per kernel version.

obviously i did something wrong with the unmerge, maybe unmerged while X was active, so old driver was in use and not removed .... i don't know, but however:
Code:

radiator / # ls -lisa /lib/modules/2.6.8-gentoo-r3/video/
total 516
 87320   0 drwxr-xr-x  2 root root    104 Sep  9 16:47 .
 86638   0 drwxr-xr-x  4 root root    448 Sep  9 16:17 ..
743309 252 -rw-r--r--  1 root root 257523 Sep  8 23:01 fglrx.ko
486250 264 -rw-r--r--  1 root root 267882 Sep  7 23:54 fglrx.old.ko
(since the old still existed before i wanted to emerge the better/faster ati driver, i decided to move the old version before)

And "modprobe fglrx" tells me now something like:
"Error while inserting module /lib/modules/2.6.8-gentoo-r3/video/fglrx.old.ko, unresolved symbols"

i just want modprobe to use fglrx.ko and not fglrx.old.ko which is a version that does not work here at the moment.

OK, stop X running, then try this:
Code:
rmmod fglrx
rm -f /lib/modules/2.6.8-gentoo-r3/video/fglrx*
emerge -C ati-drivers
opengl-update xorg-x11 (or opengl-update xfree if you're still using that)
emerge =ati-drivers-3.2.8-r2
opengl-update ati
modprobe fglrx

That should ensure that the old module is gone, and that the 3.2.8 driver is the only one installed.
