what is the difference between the alsa sound stuff and just loading the kernel module for your sound card? |

Alsa supports a bunch of sound cards, with mixer, common interface, ability to use the OSS (open sound system) drivers., and probably more.
The kernel sound drivers work ok, but if you can use alsa drivers for your sound card, I would suggest doing it. If you then add 'alsa' to your /etc/make.profile/make.default (i think) any app you build that has support for alsa will use it. Pretty slick |

i've been trying to set up the alsa stuff and its been nothing but a headache, so i've been pondering if its worth the effort. |
