I just compiled rhythmbox 0.4.1 (I basically simply renamed the 0.4.0 ebuild) and got greeted with that popup when running it:
[img:40f4d02a65]http://mortal.de/images/rhythmbox-warning.png[/img:40f4d02a65]
That translates to:
[img:40f4d02a65]http://mortal.de/images/warn-en.png[/img:40f4d02a65]
Slightly sarcastic, isn't it?
Yours,
Larde. _________________ Someday this will be my home... http://moonage.net/

Sounds like rhythmbox developers aren't very friendly. Guess there's no chance I'll every find out what it is by using it. _________________ lolgov. 'cause where we're going, you don't have civil liberties.

| I would file a bug report on that one... to at least have them have a sensible warning in there about over optimization, or what ever they are worried about. |

I took a quick look over their development list and CVS, and couldn't find any concrete explanation of what they're upset about. Maybe Spider knows. In any case, the test checks for the existence of /etc/gentoo-release, is called "check_gentoo" in shell/main.c and should be pretty easy to disable. When doing so, stick your tongue out at that catty little comment above it. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

<jonemi> Hi, all
<jonemi> could someone explain this: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=26322
[...]
<kris> jonemi: that has been discussed
[...]
<kris> jonemi: the developer added that warning
<jonemi> kris: who and why?
<kris> jonemi: jorn is the main developer, he added it because of the enormous amount of bugs coming from gentoo users mostly caused by misconfigured systems or something like that
<kris> jonemi: I do not know about all details
<kris> jonemi: the warning has been discussed privately with people from gentoo
<jonemi> kris: ahh...
<kris> there was a plan IIRC
<kris> but I dunno of the state
<jonemi> OK, thanks, was curious.
<kris> you should ask jorn about that
<kris> the warning will be pulled later on

ask him later on!!!
sounds like a lazy programmer who's wanting to code for the mainstream OS rather than coding for cross-distro compatibility. _________________ I used gentoo BEFORE it was cool. |

Well, up to now 0.4.1 seems at least more stable than 0.4.0 for me, which hadn't that warning. I don't mind if it crashes occasionally, i expect it to be unstable at 0.4.x.
It's just the first time I saw an app spit out a warning because of running Gentoo. I thought that might be interesting - hey, it means Gentoo is important enough to get "special treatment".
Have a nice day.

Well, since the premise of this method of coding just sort of bugged me I thought I would strip it out. Is there any point in submitting this as a patch to the portage tree or do we wish to respect author's suggestions when they are worded so nicely?
Regardless, I don't think this warning is really necessary, maybe a message at the end of the ebuild would be more appropriate?

< check_gentoo (void)
< {
< /*
< * Dear Gentoo packager,
< *
< * I would like to ask you to respect our decision to display this
< * message and not hack this out.
< */
< if (g_file_test ("/etc/gentoo-release", G_FILE_TEST_EXISTS) == TRUE)
< {
< rb_warning_dialog (_("Well well well...\n\n"
< "Gentoo eh? You'll run into problems. We know. Don't bug us.\n\n"
< "Have a nice day."));
< }
< }

< check_gentoo ();

A message isn't really the issue. Choice of words for the message could have been better. _________________ lolgov. 'cause where we're going, you don't have civil liberties.

I completely agree, they should state their concerns more clearly, right now it's just flamebait. |

No, it isn't really important at all. But I think submitting a patch to make it "work" on Gentoo systems would be nice.
Edit: That is, patch to the authors/sourceforge project/bugzilla not to the Portage tree. |
