To my understanding, lilo can accept interactive (w/ login prompt) boot screens, in PCX format, up to 256 colors in either 320x200, 640x400 and in newer versions 640x480.

I've created a boot screen and I've found a Gimp script which saves the file in the correct format. Will a normal PCX file work w/ it w/o running the Gimp. There was also a C program I'd come across a while ago but I cannot find it.

Thanks

The standard lilo is only accepting BMP Images with 16 Colors, but there are several hacks by suse or redhat around, which use other formats. For the standard see /usr/share/doc/lilo-22.3.3-r1/README.bitmaps.gz :D

Thanks for the link, heino, I never would have found it otherwise. I like the classical login screen as well " login: " , but I must say, I would like a fancier one. I want a nice looking boot up screen and make the system overall look nicer. I am definately not going for a Windows look, just more of a personal touch. :-)

Heh, this reminded me of an article on Slashdot a while back so I found it in a quick search. This guy not only hacked images and animation, he put in a a game of breakout. Hopefully you didn't have to win to be able to boot :-)

Well from this link http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/lilo/index.html I was able to make the penguins boot screen works.

You need framebuffer to make it work btw ... I use vesa and works great.

As for the image itself its a PCX format and if you google a little bit I found a page were they explain how to make animated boot screen or just a simple image with you choice of OS.

[edit]
I found the page where they explain how to do it : http://www.13thfloor.at/Software/lilo-splash/Example/

Hope this will help you
