OK, folks, here's my situation:

I am a happily married guy who lives with a wife and a 20-year-old stepdaughter. I am a sort of ordinary engineer/CS type, with a sense of humor like the one they talk about in the quote "He who laughs last thinks slowest." That's me, for certain. But that doesn't mean that I have no humor at all. My wife, she's quick with a funny comeback to most anything. And the daughter, she should write for Comedy Central, I don't know how she comes up with such funny stuff so quickly.

The story:

My wife and I were having a good-natured exchange regarding some work she wanted me to do, and she just kept on coming back about doing it her way, which, of course was about diametrically opposite from my way. After a few dozen rounds of this exchange, the daughter chimes in with, "Goddammit, Mom, he's not your flying monkey. Let him do it like he wants!" Well, that title seemed profound at the time, and so the "flying monkey" title stuck. My wife has shortened it down to "Monk" now, and I get as much mileage out of it as I can. We get a lot of laughs over this. I can even make acceptable "Eep, Eep, Eep" noises like China from the Tarzan movies.

Now, I need some help from this creative crowd to capitalize on it. I'll attempt to change my online name in this forum to flying_monkey, for a start. (If I do that, can all my previous posts have the username changed as well? Or would I start off with 0 posts again, not that I have that many now?) But I'd love to come up with a picture of one of the monkeys from "The Wizard of Oz" movie to use for an avatar. Can someone help here? I'd also accept suggestions for a witty sig line related to this subject. If I were a Wiz scholar, I'd probably come up with some line from the movie for that.

Thanks,
Ed

You should PM klieber or rac about changing your name. I believe this is something a site admin can do. Pacman was once DArtangnan, err.. DArtangnan was once pacman. I remember him more by the first one still..

As for the pictures, you can search google for images. :)

That's service with a smile! As all can see, most of the mission is accomplished. Now for the sig line.

Of course, any suggestions anyone might give for reflecting this back at the aforementioned ladies would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ed (Monk?)

Well, I found a tidbit of trivia that may prove useful for you. Someone wanted to know if the flying moneys had a name. The answer turned up was:

"Turns out the flying monkeys don't have an unusual or exotic tribal name. In the Oz books, they're just called flying monkeys or winged monkeys and they aren't named. However, in the movie the leader is named Nikko. We learned that Nikko is listed in the credits, even though his character was never referred to by name. On last tidbit: Nikko was played by Pat Walshe."

For a sig, something like:
Flying Monkey for hire: Will torment Kansas girls for food.
or
Coming this fall to Fox: "When Flying Monkeys Attack"

and there are always tried and true Simpsons quotes:
* Bart: "How would I go about creating a half-man, half-monkey-type creature?"

That's it. The race is over. No other distribution can claim this superb level of service.

I can see it now on Linux Journal:

Not only can Gentoo revolutionize your Linux experience, but the Forum experience can actually CHANGE you.

Wow!

I know you were being funny, but yes, she's single. I have an idea that the distance between
New Jersey and Denmark would be an obstacle in your path. PM me with a description of
your self (not just physical), and I might be able to get permission to return her email
address.

Wow! I didn't realize the gentoo forums had become that helpful. Now we're talking about service with a smile. :)

Okay, I'm definately jealous. I've stewed and stewed and I just can't get over it.

I want a new identity too!

I'm a psychology graduate student, so I was thinking about something like "B_F_Skinner" (with a picture of a cool looking white lab rat for my avatar).

Can anyone help me out?

Warning: This could change into a "I want an identity operation" forum! :)

I'm not very sure... But I think that guy posted the article (in a shorter version) some time ago over kuro5hin. (daily)Beacon indeed! The guy *glows* with desperation! Hahahahaha! He is looking for a gf and goes around posting his interest in geek places... Something about strategies here... And then he goes on describing geeks as saints, the all time classic error of geeks: if you are _too much_ of a saint you'll end up being too much of a valuable friend (read: exploitable material) to risk with a relationship.
Not that you should be total bastards but your kindness should be put forward as "negotiable" and not "granted."

Hahah! I didn't realise it was you the actual writer... 8O
Well then, someone quoted you almost verbatim. I'm not in the mood for looking it up (perhaps later I'll try w/ google - K5's search can be a real pain + the possibilty that said article never made it through the moderation queue).

Sorry, but when I submittedd it to the newspaper, it became their property, not mine. The best you can do is link to it.

It pisses me off, too.

Huh? Did you sign something which assigned them the copyright for your work?

There's a note in the paper stating that all submissions become the propeerrty of the paper. Most papers have them, or something along those lines.

Computer Geeks, on the whole, tend to be more sincere, more respectful, and nicer than regular guys. We know how to treat a woman like a lady, not like a one-night-stand.

On the whole the article did have some merit, but i've got a couple comments. the above quote first of all, although seeming nothing but complimentary, isn't infact true, and makes you come across as self righteous.. God knows my Girlfriend has gotten pissed at me more times than I can count... so I guess i'm not one of these ultra-sweet geek guys.

Quote:

Though we are more than capable of doing so, since we have refined the esoteric art of the Google Search to the point where a Geek may find instructions on Yugoslavian Folk Dancing classes in Decatur, Ill. within two minutes.

LOL!! No gripe here, that was hillarious.

Quote:

We treat people the way they want to be treated because we know what it's like to be treated as second-class citizens. And all this will only endear him to your family and help them forget the freak with the spikes in his face and the blue hair you brought home last time.

Blue hair and face-spikes are not purely anti-geek traits. I dont have any piercings, but i've had many a hair color in my early days...

Quote:
Add to this the simple fact that we've been pariahs throughout most of our educational careers, and your question is answered. High school was an incredibly traumatic time for Geeks, since we really didn't care about the latest fashion trends or who was dating who this week or any other pedantic high school topic. We saw them as asinine and elitist and were normally the brunt of a great deal of harsh treatment from the jocks and "The In Crowd(TM)".

at my school it was more of a rivalry between Jocks and anti-jocks. there was no "geek" classification, everyone who wasn't a jock hated jocks. we shared a common hatred and also gained protection :)

I'm gonna cut this short cuz I have to go get some "one on one coaching" even though I'm leaving my job in 2 weeks they feel the need to waste more company time and money on making sure I'm as pleasantly annoying on the phone as possible... corporations suck.
