Firstly, a question; Is the location of binary files determined by the ebuilds/portage system?
If so, I have noticed that 99% of all binaries seem to end up in /usr/bin/. My current /usr/bin/ directory contains ~1800 files at present, a lot of which are clearly X programs. Would it not be a little better organised if the binaries were put in /usr/X11R6/bin/ and /usr/local/bin/ where it is appropriate to do so, as suggested by the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard?!?
What are peoples thoughts on this? |

It doesn't bother me... since all of the places you mentioned are in my PATH |

Gentoo Linux Developers HOWTO wrote: | 3.Filesystem Locations- X11-specific programs and libraries should always be installed into /usr, not directly into /usr/X11R6. We reserve the /usr/X11R6 hierarchy for the X Window System, Version 11 Release 6 itself. This is perhaps a more to-the-letter interpretation of the FHS than some other distributions have made.
