Hello!

emerge -up system tells me to:
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/binutils-2.13.90.0.16 [2.13.90.0.4-r0]
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/util-linux-2.11y [2.11u-r0]

but binutils and util-linux will not load from mirror (sunet.se):
300 Multiple Choices

similar fault from ibiblio too...

what's wrong?

It looks to me like util-linux-2.11y was compressed with bzip2, but emerge looks for a gzipped filename. In http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/distfiles:

util-linux-2.11r.tar.gz
util-linux-2.11t.tar.gz
util-linux-2.11u.tar.gz
util-linux-2.11w.tar.gz
util-linux-2.11y.tar.bz2

Does anyone know how to tell emerge to use the bz2 file instead of gz? I tried bunzip2 -> gzip, but the checksum ended up being wrong.

I just got the same problem. Normally it'd fall back to the SRC_URI at kernel.org which is the right URL, but kernel.org is down right now. Simple solution? I hacked the ebuild (/usr/portage/sys-apps/...) and put the bzip file in the SRC_URI (http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/distfiles/util-linux-2.11y.tar.bz2)

I do
Code:
emerge rsync

and then
Code:
emerge -u system

Now I get the same error as before but when downloading portage-2.0.45-r5.tar.bz2

Code:

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 300 Multiple Choices
Continued download failed on this file, which conflicts with `-c'.
Refusing to truncate existing file `/usr/portage/distfiles/portage-2.0.45-r5.tar.bz2'.

>>> Please delete /usr/portage/distfiles/portage-2.0.45-r5.tar.bz2 and refetch.

I did not understand the advice given before (gz vs, b2z). Can I just wait for the next version, or will this problem persist until I do something?

Did you try the advice in the last line? Looks very much like a corrupted file...

Yes, but with the binutils file: First I deleted the file and then I did
emerge rsync
and
emerge -u system
but if I remember correctly the same thing happend again.

Could be that what I did is not what is meant by "refetch"?

Perhaps I should fetch the file manually and overwrite the
/usr/portage/distfiles/portage-2.0.45-r5.tar.bz2
file? In that case where do I find it?

Thanks for all the feedback! :-)

No, why the binutils file? Delete portage-2.0.45-r5.tar.bz2 in /usr/portage/distfiles/ and emerge portage again.
All downloaded ebuilds resides in /usr/portage/distfiles.
If some of the downloaded files get broken (happens sometimes), you have to delete them.
Otherwise the already downloaded (broken in your case) files would be compiled again.

util-linux still does not work for me:
Code:

nor binutils
Code:

bash-2.05a# emerge -p binutils

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild    U ] sys-devel/binutils-2.13.90.0.16 [2.13.90.0.4-r0]

bash-2.05a# emerge -u binutils

I have put an older verson of binutils here:
/usr/portage/distfiles/binutils-2.13.90.0.4.tar.bz2
and tried to emerge it with
emerge -k
but that did not work.
