Ok, heres the problem, I'm done with almost everything in the install doc. In #16 it asks you to use install grub. Here is where the problem lays.
# gurb
grub> root (hd0,0) --- Completes w/o error
grub>setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no
Error 15: File Not Found
What should I do, when I cd into /boot/grub/
stage1 is there, ah, frusterating.
I've read the forums and this article
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=2878&highlight=error+grub
seems very similar, yet I'm not quite sure what all he did.
My harddrive layout is as follows.
Boot /dev/hda1 ext3
Swap /dev/hda2 swap
Linux /dev/hda3 ext3
Thanks for all your help
Dale

Well first I'll ask the obvious.... Do you have your /boot partition mounted?
Second, do you have any other hard drives in the system that GRUB might think is hd0 yet "shouldn't" be?? |

Ok, well I used
root (hd0,2)
setup (hd0)
and grub ran succesfully, what exactly does that mean?
Somehow I installed linux to the wrong partition?
LOL, a noob trialing and erroring, and in the processes learning.
Thanks Dale |

I would say that means you forgot to mount /dev/hda1 on /boot. GRUB is now telling you that it is going to boot from the boot directory of your / partition. This is ok - you dont *need* a boot partition.... just make sure you put the kernel bzImage into /boot on /dev/hda3 not onto /dev/hda1
Hope that's makes sense |
